  • "War Movie" Agents

I've written a high-concept WWII screenplay using a fascinating historical anecdote that - to my knowledge - has never been exploited in film. One of those gems that's just sitting there waiting to be picked up. It'd be a fantastic tribute to a particular group of aging veterans who've sort of been overlooked. Does anyone know of any agents or managers who have an interest in war movies?

    Thanks,
    John

Don't know about agents, but there's a small production company that's a big fan of WW2 stuff:

Does anybody have Tom Hanks' or Stephen Spielberg's cell number? Or maybe Tom Cruise? They're big WWII fans. I could give them a call.

Thanks for the production company info!

The truth is, dude, that unless you can get a player of this caliber to express interest, the odds of any agent or manager wanting to read it are pretty slim on account of studios simply aren't looking for movies like this. Period stuff is expensive and war films generally don't do well at the box office.

Sorry if I just gave you a bitter pill to swallow, but them are the breaks....

The only agents I know who are interested in WWII movies are the ones who don't want to sell anything. It's a small group and they're all out of work.

Ditto Mac's post but if you really have a high concept project that's a "gem" then every agent in town will be after it... so contact any & all.

No, but be aware of the reality.

Well, I'm glad I did my second Nicholl's script before being emotionally contaminated by this thread! It's a war-drama-romance and I'm thrilled with it! The last thing I want to do is follow trends!

It sounds as if just about everything is 'impossible' and the market is 'down' and nothing is being sold anyway, so I guess I might as well write and plug what I like! And it helps keep me sane at my day job.

                            Re: "War Movie" Agents

As I've said elsewhere, I'm glad I'm an "oldster" starting out in this business, because with the typical young person's sensitivities it'd be easy to be deflated by all the obstacles. And being an oldster I've seen the obstacles in every field of endeavor I've tried, so... nothing new there.

I've just started my sixth script, using a work-habit formula that's worked well for the past two. The first three were just downright painful. But they were how I learned.

So far, I've done an apocalyptic flick, a sweet family on a farm melodrama, a road movie, a comedy, a war flick, and #6 underway is sort of another apocalyptic flick - a flip of the first one.

I haven't settled into a "specialty" yet, probably won't, and kind of hope I never do.

On the other hand, I think anybody would be able to tell from the characterizations and tone that the same writer's written each of the five I've completed, because there's some consistency even if unintended.

Somewhere, I read Bill Martell say how much he enjoyed writing his action flicks. He sounds like he'd love to be commissioned to write the next three Indiana Joneses.

Whether or not I specialize, I am already enjoying what I write - and I hope it stays that way. I'm a "spec-man" through and through. If I ever get good enough, hopefully my "commissions" will be to just write "specs" because they know they're going to get something unusual and worthwhile.

                            Now that'd be the life!

Everyone needs to write a story that drives them. When you doing anything on spec (as most of us here do) it's that passion that'll ultimately keep you inspired to reach "FADE OUT."

But if you're actively looking to break into Hollywood as a screenwriter, you need to be aware of the monumental odds stacked against you. Those odds only get worse when your passion projects are ones that agents & managers deem unsellable and studios have no interest in buying / making.

That's not to say it's impossible, however. You may find a rep with a proclivity for WWII stories...that rep may know of a big producer or director or actor who's looking for something in that vein...your script may be slipped to said talent, etc.

These are the kind of stories we all read about every so often, right? So by all means keep on keeping on.
