Re: The unsolicited material problem
@dangerouscreenwriter: I'm a professional novel writer, this may help. These 2 scripts are not the first things I've ever written. I know how to built characters, dramatic storylines and scenes. If I don't try it with these two, I'll get zero feedback and never will improve. I recently got a read for #2, but they hadn't enough budget, however I got uplifting feedback.
My experiences so far with this query campaign (I don't know, if this is standard, it probably is).
-sent out: about 30 including VPF (28 for #1, 2 for #2)
-got letters back because of "unsolicited material": 3 so far (I admit, sending paper mail was not a good idea, you were right, folks :/. Now the poor guys had work with sending the letters back^^)
-declined before reading: 3 (1 because of budget, 2 because of no interest in the theme)
-positive reactions at least: 2
-read requests: 2 (one I haven't heard again, it is now 2 months, the other declined because of budget).
(There's one question I wonder about ever since I started caring about the screenwriting business: we all struggle so hard to get the best out of us, and the producers are rightfully very picky.... How the hell we got to see such things as we discussed in the 'crappiest movies you've ever seen'? What went wrong? Not that we have to discuss it here because this is the thread for "unsolicited material".
