If you enter the contest that you don't even make the first round yet you still manage to have an agent even if your hip pocketed by an agent because of your screenplay, does that mean you have more talent or less talent? I ask because there's a lot of hype about winning and getting signed and feeling more legitimate because of an announcement that you won, and thus you can get your

(Missing sentence ending in your post?)

Anyway, a contest placement is merely an affirmation by somebody that they liked your work, and that there may be a bit of a $ payoff for you. Cool.

That is, it's always better than no affirmation at all.

Better, is to have a rep, because unlike a contest win the rep suggests you're market-ready. But it's hard to get a rep, so having an option/sale/produced credit (even for a short film) are equal or better affirmations.

Reaching success is one step after another, sometimes even sideways/backwards (if you learn something or make a great contact at the same time) too.

And always, always, always, keep writing.

There's that old trope that the average writer who breaks in has 9 scripts.

Well, there are tales of those who break in with their first, and I'm at 50+ so am the sad-sack who's dragging that trope average higher.

But the overall lesson is to have lots of scripts under your belt - it's the best way to learn.

The true "contest" is getting a rep to like your work enough to sign you. Maybe try to sell it. Then the biggest script contest is seeing if someone will buy it.

The rest is just participation trophies.
