    Re: Dredd - poster

    I'll be the Negative Nancy.

I wasn't blown away with the trailer but I'm still looking forward to the movie.
Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

Anybody get to see the screening at Comic-Con? Reviews are out. Which is kinda weird for a movie that isn't going to be released for another couple of months.

The Comic Con screening got some rave reviews. Here is a new clip from Dredd - contains extreme 'comic-book' type violence:

            Re: Dredd - poster

As a long term reader of Judge Dredd - by the way, the character is called JUDGE DREDD - not DREDD (sigh).... I don't think this clip is true to Judge Dredd.

This clip (and I assume the rest of the film) is just gun porn.

There is no need to linger on kill shots. It's exploitative cinema.

You're being asked to see graphic moving images of death but slowed down to make them look even more disturbing! This is porn because it’s exploiting your reaction to death and serious injury. It’s not enough to show a quick kill shot to the head, no, they got to linger, to show it slowly, to make it look as graphic as possible and perversely beautiful. See how cynical it is?

It's not enough to make this film violent, they (the producers) have to make it ultra violent. But why? 2000AD's Judge Dredd is not the comic book equivalent of gun porn. It's mainly a satire of American 20th century life and placed in a sci-fi world. It's not about lingering shots of death. People die, it's drawn in a panel, the story moves on. 2000AD's Judge Dredd doesn't show six panels of some guy with his head blown up. But this film isn't like that. It wants you to linger, to see the deaths in slo-motion, to see all kinds of graphic (and often very slow) ways to kill people. Why? Well, most likely to make up for a one dimensional plot! And because the producers of Dredd see the material as nothing more than gun porn with a cool hero and a cool gun.

People might like this gun porn approach but no-one should kid themselves it's done for artistic or plot reasons. It's done for cynical reasons. No type of porn is done for artistic reasons. As a life-long Judge Dredd fan I find this a bit sad and depressing but hey, if people wanna see slow death kills, go ahead and enjoy them. But Judge Dredd - the comic version - is not gun porn. It's violent, for sure, but it doesn't linger on the violence. Dredd 3D does. And that makes it a cynical reinvention of the character and made by people with cynical intent. But this is nothing new with film making. The new Spider-Man film is a cynical reboot of the character but it's a money-maker. Perhaps 'Dredd gun porn' will make money too.

that lil clip was painfully boring to watch.

i imagine the rest of the movie wont be much better.

                  I'm extremely confused.

Bio and Qaz always manage to breathe fresh air into any discussion, that I've always considered them to be long-lost brothers (or sisters), separated at birth, but reconnecting on message boards and comic book shops across the country, dispensing their particular brand of silver lining.

                  Yet they disagree on Dredd.

As I said, I'm extremely confused. Yes, yes, it may be a natural state for me, but my confidence in message boards and the roles people play on them is now shaken.

                    Love it.

Don't mind the tinkerings with the costume to make it more actor friendly and more realistic for use.

Judge Dredd gun porn works for me. I was always fascinated by his firearm.

The clip (or gun pr0n scene) is slowed down because we're experiencing the scene from the point-of-view of the drug users in the den. The drug Slo-Mo makes users experience everything at 1% its normal speed. The way the colors jump from gritty (outside the room) to oversaturated technicolor (POV of the drug users) is the giveaway.

It was written like that in the script too. And there isn't a whole lot of these in the movie. This was probably the main one.

                        Possibly interesting related tidbit -

Anthrax released a song about Judge Dredd entitled "I Am The Law" on their classic "Among the Living" album.

More tidbits - from wikipedia -

The cover of Among the Living depicts the Rev. Henry Kane, antagonist from the Poltergeist series of films. It has also been speculated that the cover is an homage to the character Randall Flagg, the antagonist from the Stephen King novel The Stand, as this character is the subject of the album's title track.[6] "A Skeleton In The Closet" is also inspired by a Stephen King novella entitled Apt Pupil.

I was initially pretty lukewarm to this, but this actually looks pretty awesome.

Any idea what Karl Urban is doing next? When I read White House Down, I pictured him as the protag.

One of their best songs. Definitely their best album.

Loved Stallone's flick. Came out at the right time/year.

As for this reboot - I won't bother.
