  • Oncology Unit at Hospital

    Hey guys,

anyone know the structure for cancer units at hospitals? Specifically, who oversees/decides which doctor goes to which patient? And if this information and info about the doctor can be released to the police?

    Thanks.

I'm almost positive that the police need to obtain a search warrant to gain access to patient medical records.

In terms of assigning doctors, it depends how your character came to be in the hospital. Do they have insurance? Did they just walk in off the street? Are they in the ICU?

Normally, if you have health insurance, you go to your primary care doctor first with symptoms, or because of findings on a test. If they suspect cancer, they refer you to an oncologist, and if you need to be hospitalized, that oncologist puts you in the hospital they are affiliated with and they remain your doctor when you are in the hospital. There may be a specific cancer unit, but it's just like a regular area of hospital rooms. They may consult with other specialists depending on your case.

Unfortunately, I know this because my niece was recently diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of lymphoma. But she's doing well and has a good chance of recovery.

Thanks, lord. (Didn't mean to be a downer.) Hope it helped if it applied to your story.
