Re: What are some great Westerns?

One that hasn't been mentioned that I think warrants inclusion: Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid. Indulgent but great sh!t from Peckinpah. Bob Dylan acts and does the score. See it. Imo Deadwood, consciously or not, borrowed some sensibilities/aesthetics from PG&BTK.

Re: What are some great Westerns?

Many great ones already mentioned, so I shan't repeat them. I also love

      Django
      The Grand Silence
      The Big Gundown
A Bullet for the General (great political western)
      Cuthroats Nine
Price of Power (JFK assassination-type plot)
      Face to Face

I'm also rather fond of Alex Cox's Walker. Aquired taste.

A Great Western, (If One Could Find A Copy)!

        THE GREY FOX

"The Pinkerton Detective Agency named him 'The Gentleman Bandit', and credited him with originating the command 'Hands up!'." ~ Old Trailer
Still not made available on DVD. I see that a VHS tape, (its last available format), is for sale at C$155.99.

Perhaps, (as most DD members haven't seen it), this is why it seldom gets mentioned in their lists. Someone has put it on YouTube, but the film and soundtrack, (with music by The Chieftains), deserves a blu-ray package.

Love me some E.L. Such a gritty writer that dirt literally falls out of his pages. You can almost hear the gravel in his voice. The fvcking man.

Digging through my memory, I think it's funny that I've seen a pile of westerns, and yet I don't think I've seen any that starred John Wayne.

Broken Trail. It was an AMC miniseries w Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church.

Okay, so what are some westerns that have great driving themes?

I can think of Unforgiven and The Searchers as great examples, but what else?

I figured that was a "given."

Actually, for me Tombstone is the most entertaining western I have ever watched, despite a few minor flaws. It is interesting to compare it with Wyatt Earp which debuted at the same time and tells the same story but has not been nearly as popular.

Also, another vote for Unforgiven, one of the few (only?) westerns to garner a Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Hard to believe that was twenty years ago.

                    HOMBRE, goddammit!

                    Seriously. HOMBRE.

And I still think OUTLAW JOSEY WALES did UNFORGIVEN better than UNFORGIVEN.

Both genres feature moral ambiguity, violence, a struggle to maintain law, and a distinct time period and visual look. Both have iconic symbols. In westerns, it's the horse. In mob movies, the black vehicles. In westerns, the revolver. In gangster movies, the tommy gun. Ten gallon hat and fedora. The genres are practically the same.

Don't know if these were mentioned...

                              Nevada Smith
                              Tom Horn
                              (both with Steve McQueen)

                              High Plains Drifter

The Black Crow ... based of the life and times of James Beckwourth... not released yet.
