    Is it still going on?

    Re: Pilot Season

Pilots have been shot. The networks are deciding what shows to pick up. Some staffing has gone on on shows that are already picked up (like returning shows), and showrunners of pilots in contention have been meeting writers for awhile, so if they're picked up they can staff quickly.

It is still going. in my limited and not so humble and probably wrong opinion, June is the high water mark of the tide that is pilot season. But that's only because Banff happens in June and that's about the extent of my knowledge of TV pilot season.

Thanks for the info. Roughly speaking, when would most of the staffing be done?

Pickups happen mid-May. (I think the four major networks announce next week.) Staffing happens immediately after that. Most shows staff from the top down. Within a few weeks, it's largely over.

But if you're up for jobs, you're probably being read/meeting already.

assuming that you're looking to break in as a staff writer...

the last week of may is when thought will be given to your level for new network shows.

Your competition will be diversity hires from programs, staff writers from failed shows looking for their next gig, and assistants ready to move up.

How do you get on this, what seems at times, mythical diversity bus? Good to know for next year's pilot season.

                Re: Pilot Season

certain studios/networks have diversity departments that front the salary for diverse staff writers for a season. Have your reps submit your material to them, get a meeting and they'll think of you when the opportunity comes up. Many shows welcome getting a free writer. Your material has to be up to snuff though and appropriate for the hiring show.

Otherwise, the studios have diversity programs -- CBS mentors, FOX pilot program, NBC Writers on the Verge -- that you apply to and they will in turn try to staff you on their shows.
