Default Fresh Voice Writers Contest

Any experience in this? What is a good score? Is it a good contest?

Hi stainjm,

My screenplay finished in 3rd place in the 2011 contest, thriller category. It received a score of 137/160. The coverage report was well-written and useful, and led to my making some improvements to the script.

Overall, this is about as well-run as a contest can get. My coverage report arrived quickly and within the timeframe mentioned. Each round of results was reported on schedule. My prizes were delivered as soon as I learned my placement. One of the prizes was a coverage report for another script, which again I found helpful.

Another prize I won was a query blasting service. I never used one of these before as it just feels too much like spam to me. But since I got it for free I decided to give it a try with my latest screenplay (not the one that placed in the contest). I beleive I got ten-fifteen script requests out of it, mostly from obscure places. However, one request came from a manager I had queried before with other material. She had liked my writing and remembered me, and therefore also requested this, my latest script. Luckily for me, she loved this one and then agreed to become my manager.

So I guess you could say I got a manager from this contest, except I would've queried her individually anyway if she hadn't seen my query in the blaster. I knew she liked my writing and was willing to read new material of mine. But I suppose it's proof that you just need to keep putting new material out there, and querying as much as possible, and eventually something will happen. And contests like this are one way to keep you doing that.

I'm not sure how good Fresh Voices' own connections are. I never received a script request through the contest itself. However, I think it's a contest worth entering because it's very well-run, their coverage reports are pretty insightful, and the prizes related to querying can help you get your script out there in front of industry eyes.

If you're interested, I outlined my experience with Fresh Voices at this link.

Short version: I completely agree with Margie, as my experience (2nd-place finisher in the "Action" category) was similar. Good people, very well-run contest, excellent feedback, on-time posting of rounds and winners, solid prizes, and lots of resultant reads.

Has anyone received their feedback? I entered early on, and I'm still waiting. I sent an email but have not heard back. Thanks and good luck to all in.

Yeah, I'm still waiting as well. The turnaround was a lot faster last year.

Sent an email, no response, still waiting, too. I entered the Comedy/RomCom category on Sept. 8.

Oh, I got both my feedbacks about 3 or 4 weeks ago - maybe it depends on the reader?
