  • Greatest minor characters in film?

A standout for me is Ernst Kessler in The Great Waldo Pepper. His recounting to Waldo of his famous dogfight is pure gold.

    Anyone else have other show-stealers?

Hmm. Kind of hard to do a Han Solo impersonation with text.

The dude who kills frogs in THE MUPPET MOVIE (the old one).

Paul Giamatti in MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING.

The Train Ghost in GHOST... and the old dude in the hospital is great, too.

The newspaper boy in BETTER OFF DEAD... and the two Asian Race Car Drivers are great, too.

LaTrine in TOP SECRET! I also love Chocolate Mousse and Dejavu.

Because I watched it again last night - Detective Nulty in MURDER MY SWEET who says "I wouldn't know" as the answer to any question... I think it may be his only line of dialogue, but spoken at least two dozen times with different inflections and meanings.

This scene changed the way I write forever.

Your two leads need a ride?

                  They're stranded?

You gotta get them from point A to B?

You wanna show them hitchhike and then CUT TO, or do you wanna do this...

Dejavu is one of my favorite characters of all time.

                    "...and this is Dejavu."
Dejavu shakes hands and looks at him closely. "Haven't we met before?"

Re: Greatest minor characters in film?

A few more I thought of while swimming:

The Jason Robards character in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. He has about 4 lines and 3 minutes, but the expression on his face makes it look like he needs to sleep for about 6 weeks.

                          Easy Andy in Taxi Driver.

Butler in McCabe and Mrs Miller. The way he strolls into McCabe's pissing ground and makes it his own is fantastic. His teenage killer offsider is pretty good too.

                          Ben in Blue Velvet.

Some anonymous Jamaican girl with a minute in The Harder They Come. "Preacher is a man of the Lord - but he's a man all the same".

EDIT: one I forgot - the "filth starts maggots and riots" woman in Five Easy Pieces. (Followed by the male nurse in the same film).

Can you call Hyman Roth a minor character? If so - he's on the list.

Oh man - I've got no way to prove it to you, but I've been gushing about that scene for YEARS. Absolutely hilarious.
