  • Stories with Translators

    Looking for examples of screenplays where an interpreter regularly helps the protagonist in places where he/she doesn't speak the native language. Thank you.

    1. I think you mean "interpreter."

    2. "The West Wing" had a deaf recurring character; "Emperor" followed an American officer in occupied Japan.

        Check out Black Robe (an oft-overlooked classic).

        Also, war movies often feature an interpreter. The Killing Fields comes to mind. Zero Dark Thirty. Many others, I'm sure.

              I love the Dances with Wolves "No... not 'Dumb Bear...'"

              This short with Navid Negahban and Nazanin Boniadi (both of Homeland in various seasons) featured two interpreters working for world leaders in negotiations-- I guess saying more would give away the story, but check it out. https://vimeo.com/23562755

                Bob Balaban interpreting for Francois Truffaut in Close Encounters of the Third Kind had some good comedic moments.
