    Re: Hidden, Overlooked Gems

Don't know if Dancer in the Dark qualifies,

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168629/

For me, the emotional impact of this film is profound, I don't even think i can bring myself to watch it again.

    And TESTUO

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096251/

A strange man known only as the "metal fetishist", who seems to have an insane compulsion to stick scrap metal into his body, is hit and possibly killed by a Japanese "salaryman", out for a drive with his girlfriend. The salaryman then notices that he is being slowly overtaken by some kind of disease that is turning his body into scrap metal, and that his nemesis is not in fact dead but is somehow masterminding and guiding his rage and frustration-fueled transformation.

    what more do you need.

      Explanation

Cohen & Tate - two hitmen, one calm and professional, the other a loose cannon, have to escort a little kid who witnessed a gangland killing back to their crime boss. The kid knows his only chance of survival is to play the two men against one another.

Great dialogue, great tension and great action from the guy who gave us The Hitcher.

      Night of the Creeps
      - a tour de force homage to 50s sci fi, monsters, aliens -a real labour of love with plenty of killer lines and the awesome Tom atkins chewing the scenery. A B movie that loves the fact it's a B movie. lus it has the most beautiful woman of all time - Jill Whitlow.

      Dog Soldiers -
Aliens meets Jaws meets Predator in the werewolf blast. You won't know whether to laugh or cry. Very Btitish, very awesome lines, plenty of film references including Zulu, Aliens and The Matrix amongst others. Best line: a guy is about to be eaten and says "I hope I give you the shits!"

      Phantasm II -
the ball is back! One of the creepiest set ups in modern cinema is given a bigger budget and expanded upon from the mega oow budget original. Quirky, original, funny, gory. Plus, the BALL!!!!

      Swimming With Sharks -
an inside look at what it means to be working as an intern in Hollywood. A black comedy that features a harrassed young exec as he is relentlessly bullied by studio Vice President Kevin Spacey (apparently inspired by Joel Silver).

Yeah. And Audrey's character is one of millions in real life, sad to say.

The Reef - best shark film after Jaws.

Dragonslayer - very dark Disney film and the most awesome dragon ever.

Virus - big budget action/sci fi about an alien entity that correctlly deems mankind as a virus and sets to wipe him out via building robots and using humans as spare parts.

Moon - fabulous, fabulous film. Gets better with each viewing. Fantastic acting by Sam Rockwell and fantastic, not-in-your-face cgi (the way it should be) and stunning effects for a mere $5m.

Vengeance the Demon (aka Punpkinhead) - Lance Henriksen's little boy is killedin an accident and he summons a demon for his vengeance. Cool monster, cool concept, nice twist.

                        Solomon Kane
                        - Very drak & gritty tale. Stunning visuals and direction, DP deserved an Oscar. Criminal that it didn't get a US theatrical release.Solomon is the newest and coolest and most badass hero since Han Solo.

Vamp - Grace Jones vampire flick, with some great, great humour and genuine shocks. Tarantino definitelty watched this before he wrote Dusk 'til Dawn.

Good choices so far. One film I'd add that I haven't seen get that much recognition when it's on my all time top 100 list is this one:

                                http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114787/

So enjoyable and a definite Fellini-esque tone throughout...
