  • Script Price...Minimum...Maximum.

    Hello,
I'm new at this and I'm just wondering what the average price is for a screenplay. What's the minimum and maximum that a screenwriter can get for a script?
Probably this question was answered before. I did a search, but I did not find a precise answer.

    Thanks for your answer.

    $0 to $infinity.

    Are you talking guild standards?

That's a price for almost anything in life...
There must be some standards...Yes guild standards for instance...

It took a few minutes of searching around on the site that Hairy gave.

Guild rates apply to guild members. Otherwise the $0 to infinity still applies. You should try to get the average of those two numbers as a starting point.

What is 0 plus infinity divided by 2?

                  Most scripts don't sell.

Some scripts sell for next to nothing, others sell for millions. There really is no answer.

Since most scripts don't sell, I always figure my scripts won't bring me any money, so that I can be pleasantly surprised.

                      How optimistic you are!
I'm just wondering that if most scripts don't sell, then what the heck are wasting our time about? I know there's a pleasure in what we do, but nobody can say that has been successful until he finds someone who buys what he does.
If most scripts don't sell, how is the movie industry making 4 or 5 new movies every week? Is it the same four writers for all the movies we can have every weekend?
I do believe that if you can write a great script, you sure find someone to buy it and make a great movie out of it.

                        Re: Script Price...Minimum...Maximum.

Every year something like 50,000 scripts are registerd with WGA.

                        About 250 films are made.

Out of those, maybe 75% are based on novels, plays, comic books, TV shows, old movies, etc. Guess what? Those projects are work for hires and usually not registered with WGA.

Factor in that at the end of the year the scripts that don't sell aren't off the market - writers are still trying to sell those. So after 10 years you have half a million scripts out there....

                        You do the math.

0.000125% chance of a piece of work registered with the WGA being bought and made. Do I win a prize?

However, just to give some succour to failing spirits it should be noted that 95% of the 50,000 pieces of material registered with the WGA annually is most likely a load of bollocks.

Providing your piece of material is not part of that bollocks then your chances increase significantly.

I agree. These statistics can be misleading, 50,000 registered scripts and only 250 films made...

There is a very good chance that 49,500 of those registered scripts are pure crap and never had a chance to be made in the first place. (One of my first scripts falls into this pure crap category..LOL)

250 films made from the other 500 decent scripts...the odds change dramatically. Screenwriting is not a lottery. Hone your craft, keep writing and keep submitting.

What one man (or woman) can do, another can do.
Assuming, of course your script isn't pure crap.
Felicitations, malefactors! I am endeavoring to misappropriate the formulary for the preparation of saleable screenplays. WHO WILL JOIN ME!

Problem is - *everyone* thinks their scripts are in that .01%.

Most people's first scripts are crap (mine were).

It's not a lottery, because you are in control of the content of your scripts, but that doesn't make it easy.
