Yes, even I stopped going out to empty theaters early last week. Emma was the last (delicious) movie I viewed in a theater. I suspect you'll see lots of Mom & Pop restaurants not re-open.

With electronic submissions, there ought not be any issues with screenwriting contests. As for selling specs and staffing, those are the first-world problems of a screenwriter. First things first: Win the contest or sell the screenplay.

In other news: Shots fired at Traders World near Cincinnati, Ohio, today. A fight between two customers developed into a shooting. No indication as to what propmpted the gunslinging.

Twitter photo posted today: Lines outside a gun store in Los Angeles.

The mindset of people who think they need weapons for this virus event is wrong-headed. Simply treat others the way you wish to be treated. If they're not of that mindset, then by all means leave the area and free yourself of them. They'll cause you and everyone else nothing but trouble.

Currently, it's the Ides of March. Word to the wise: Beware the Ides of March.

I am one of those that love eating out, but had to stop just out of precaution. Even if it's takeout, it's probably wise to heat it up in a frying pan and dump the takeout bag.

Emma was one of the last movies I saw too, including Bloodshot. I noticed that the usual crowd was not there. And everyone tried to keep their seats apart. I was anxious some stranger would come and take a seat right next to me.

I was kind of concerned that finalists and winners might not get as much heat this year from their placement because of what's happening. And maybe those contests and fellowships should consider extending their deadlines. A lot of people are dealing with non-screenwriting things related to this Corona crisis. Time that usually goes to screenwriting is now going to take care of shopping, elderly relatives. For those parents, they have that extra thing of dealing with childcare and school shut downs. I was going to get a new car, but now I am not too sure about going inside a dealership.

When either of us wins or places in these contests or fellowships, then we’ll worry about the heat it does or does not generate. They probably won’t change their deadlines for this season’s round of competitions. Maybe, although I don’t see how or why, next year’s competitions somehow will reflect the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown.

Wait on the new car, IMO. Trust me, there will be deals galore—especially in fall—in a matter of a few months because of this COVID-19 lockdown. It won’t be surprising to hear the term “bailout” all over the news, either.

Even then, always shop before you buy, and by that I mean you need to find out everything you need to know about the vehicle(s) you are considering buying. This can take you weeks or months, either online or show up in-person on the lots (watch out for “lot lizards”).

Then wait until the last few days of any month to make the purchase. The article below suggests particular months, but really it all depends on when you want to take home a new vehicle. Salespersons are wheeler-dealers in the last four or five days of a month to get their monthly sales numbers up. The dealer sets up the commission structure to reward the salesperson for the number of units sold. They want to sell you the vehicle, even if there’s little profit in it for the dealer. The profit to the salesperson is in their bonus for the number of vehicles sold.

“Is the End of the Month Really the Best Time to Buy a Car?”

So long term view (assuming we're still under wartime conditions at Xmas) should we be tailoring our work for streaming services instead of the big screen so the audiences can sit at home in quarantined home comfort?

Should we be concentrating on confined thrillers where the cast and crew can self-quarantine during production?

Now I'm wondering if we as a society might return to the use of animals as beasts of burden and transportation-oxen to pull carts instead of lorries, horses and buggies instead of automobiles, goats for lawn-mowers, et cetera.

If so, then I'm glad to have the experience of growing up on a Thoroughbred horse farm. There, I followed the ferrier, or "blacksmith,- on his monthly rounds to trim and shoe over three hundred head of horses on our farm. He mentored me, and I can perform the task well. If we as a nation revert to horses as a major means of transportation, I have job security, for I can hoof it as a ferrier.

Once the nation turns again to literal horsepower, I can easily foresee writing about the subject. Whatever literary efforts may come from me after a national return to equine energy, I've already chosen a title: They Shoe Horses, Don't They?

            Re: Effect of the Coronavirus

LA finally went on much more stringent public space restrictions at midnight tonight, including closing all theaters. Trying to game out what the spec market is going to be even six months from now is frankly insane. The early estimates are Hollywood will take at least a $20 Billion hit from this, and that strikes me as the floor not the ceiling. Maybe if we had even a semi-competent and coordinated federal response from day one (two months ago), the scope of the outcome could have been mitigated. But we're still not testing anywhere near at the level we needed to be testing two or four weeks ago, so our impact is probably going to be on the scale of Italy instead of South Korea. Which probably means some extinction-level impacts on theater chains, production companies, studios, and down the food chain. Pray for their survival, write what you can with the downtime, and worry about what the "after" looks like when there actually is an after.

They really should have done the travel bans and screening months ago. I think they should just shut everything down for 3 weeks. That will at least slow the spread.

                Re: Effect of the Coronavirus

Well, I think we all know not to listen to Trump.

I heard that there is a new study out from China that indicates people who get better from COVID-19 have a 20-30% decrease in lung capacity. It's a small study.

                https://www.businessinsider.com/coro...doctors-2020-3

CNN just said the gov is in a meeting to possibly implement a curfew for non-essential businesses. I guess we'll here soon.

I went to Bertucci's on Friday night. All tables were moved to 6 feet apart and there were only four of us at the bar (2 college kids and a gentleman). The employees wore gloves.

The stop n shop was totally wiped out. All the lettuces, most of the veggies, all of the pasta except for the ones that cost $3.49/box. Canned goods, most of the meat. It was incredible. Truck arrived later in the day, so they got stocked back up, but people are nervous.

The overseas market has basically crashed. Today's not boding well, down 2,000 points.

I think there are people who believe Trump. I don't think he's right. I think he's trying to stabilize the market. Period.

Overnight Italy had 400 more deaths. In one night. I don't think it's going to get better for a while. Hopefully, I'm wrong along with a lot of other people.

Buying guns is a natural reaction because people are probably thinking that if the military are called in, which is probably a good idea to help people that will become infected, that there will also be a strain on local law enforcement and crime could spike as panic drives impulsive and dangerous behaviors.

It's a very strange feeling, right? Looks kind of normal, but there's this underlying feeling of insecurity.

More shut downs are happening as I type this. Connecticut, New York, New Jersey-- casinos, gyms and movie theaters must close by 8pm starting tonight.

be safe everyone. take care. And thank you, Captain Nemo, for posting that information.

Ha! Ex-Navy with an Air Force Commendation Medal on my chest. Served at a Pacific Broadcasting Squadron Detachment (Okinawa) during and after the Gulf War. Earned a Private Pilot license there. The Air Force Morale, Welfare, & Recreation Department provided the aero club and aircraft (nice—your tax dollars at play). Some of my instructors were active duty military pilots—F-16s, C-5 Galaxies, KC-135s, etc. (no chopper pilots, though). Picked up a lot of “Air Force speak” along the way, I suppose. Learned a lot extra about flying, too. Get razzed by veterans who see my Navy rank and me wearing an Air Force Comm. medal. Most of them think I’m one of those “stolen valor” @$$holes who bought the wrong medal at an Army/Navy Surplus store. I always have to explain. Is that considered “man-splaining”? Hope not. Just the facts.

                    Re: Effect of the Coronavirus

Just saw mandatory movie theater closings in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Maryland. I have a relative that is a gen. mgr. of a theater in Virginia and they are closing theirs along with their locations in Colorado.

Haven't heard about any closings in California. Anybody know?

In my town they are closing libraries and a few restaurants and making all open places have less than 50 people congregating at a time and keep a "social distance" of a minimum of 10 feet apart.

Not sure where this ball is gonna roll next, but it's rolling.

There you go. Thank you for your service. Never served, but think I first heard the phrase from a friend who was an 'Nam era A4 mechanic -- sadly no longer with us. Sounds like you made good use of your hitch. BTW, not of the female persuasion, but i believe 'mainsplaining' would be, e.g. being on the backstretch explaining the function of mud caulks to an experienced female trainer.

I live in a small town in CA so things are fairly normal here so far, though we're also sold out of dook paper at the stores last I checked.

I work in a large city nearby and I've heard it's getting wild. We'll probably be told to stay home before the week is over.

Heard SF is on 24 hour lockdown now. Ruh roh. I just hope there are no food shortages. Other than that I feel fine and most of the people I interact with seem ok as well.

The weird thing (to me at least) is who's getting. SARS, MERS, EBOLA, H1N1 never heard a single name I recognized if indeed I heard a single name out of the media coverage at all.

COVID 19 we have Tom Hanks and his wife, President of Brazil I think I heard, several sports stars, the wives of the presidents or Prime ministers of France, Spain and Canada and now I've just seen Idris Elba has tested positive. That seems a higher that normal ratio for 170k people affected globally?
