Yeah I live a little north of Toronto. This ain't LA, eh.

I think the premise is, I could have called 911, but by the time the operator came online, somebody could have come to me with a gun pointed at my head and demanded I tell them it was an accidental call.

Or perhaps a domestic dispute where the husband is threatening the wife.

Anyway, yeah. It's happenend to me at work and it happened to my son at home.

And btw, my wife works with the local police.

there are plenty of rural type areas like this in the US where most of the 911 calls is b/c of domestic violence.

Wild. I understand the logic but I'd be surprised if most major cities in the US have the resources to do that. We did have a meth-head who broke into someone's house and called and hung up on 911 appx 38 times in a row. The police paid him a visit.

So I guess to the OP: you have lots of options to play it like you want.

I was involved a while ago with developing a new cell phone. Part of the testing involved ringing 000/911 etc - the protocol the phone system uses is slightly different to a normal call ... it has to work with no phone credit, no SIM, wrong network etc.

After calling emergency (and explaining that it was just to test the phone) we had to convince them to hang up on us - to confirm that it didn't hold the line up and prevent us from making another call.

Have you ever tried to get an emergency operator to hang up on you?

It was almost impossible! "I'm sorry - I'm not allowed to do that"

It took a long time of explaining and cajoling to get them to hang up.

I've forgotten what the point of this anecdote was ... encroaching old age does that to you.

I like the idea of being unable to get an emergency operator off the line. Not for the original scenario I was asking about, but I'm sure one could do something interesting with that! "No, really, you have to clear this line so I can call the super-secret men in black unit!"

Another interesting tidbit, and again this is for the area I live in so I have no clue about anywhere else.

Telco's have the ability to isolate residential phone lines in case of emergencies. ie: there's a hostage situation in a home, so they want to be able to lock the phone line down so that a) the person inside can't call anyone and b) the negotiator has sole access to calling in.

I know this because I worked at a telco years ago. I have no idea how it works now with cellphones and VOIP and shit, but I'm sure they have similar setups.

One time I accidentally pocket dialed 911 while at work and they called me back and left a voice mail informing me that I had called 911 and to call back if there was an emergency. I wish I was making that up.
