    Re: Ghostbusters Trailer

Another example of how a studio would rather go with a brand than something original -- and make a big mistake by doing so. Fans of the original have little interest in seeing a remake and the Ghostbusters brand is meaningless to younger moviegoers. So, who really gives a **** other than die-hard SNL fans? And even they might pass on this turd.

It looks like another huge underperformer for Sony. In addition to what's already been said in this thread, can Sony/Columbia/Village Roadshow find a way to market this on anything other than legacy?

Sony's dismal box office last year:

I'm not a big fan of the original, but it's nice to see the remake recast with women, even though I don't expect it to be any funnier after seeing the trailer.

If you have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all.

              So let me say this...

I'm very sad after watching the trailer :'-(

I loved the early photos, the girls' setup and gadgets and now we get that piece of slapstick.

It's like there was a cultural apocalypse and an ape found a stunning miracle of pre-apocalypse technology and ran around with it emitting ear-piercing shrieks.

So. Someone on instagram posted the picture of ghosbuster all female cast/crew where they hold the "girl power" sign up.

                      http://www.today.com/popculture/meli...wer-set-t40731

Then went ahead and asked... "what if it were an all men crew and cast with a picture that said 'man power'"?

Then he said "why did they need to take an originally male concept to make their point? Why not be creative and make their own then?"

I don't agree or disagree, just wanted to see if anyone had any opinions on it. It made me giggle.

I don't think giving a film an obvious feminist angle will help it at the Box Office, especially among young male viewers. You're just alienating them.

Besides, it's not as if the original GB's were all men to stick it to women. In fact Sigourney Weaver's strong female character / presence created a great contrast with the all-male GB's. Oddly enough, having Ernie Hudson's character be a woman would've upset that balance.
I'm never wrong. Reality is just stubborn.

                          Re: Ghostbusters Trailer

The positives here are Kate McKinnon and the ghosts. McKinnon looks like she's having fun and she's a generally fresh character to what looks like an otherwise stale reboot. The ghosts look great, so that's down to how they're used.

The rest of it is a resounding silence, though I'm willing to give Wiig's blandness the benefit of the doubt as just being her character. McCarthy, while very talented, has become a warning sign to me that I'm about to watch something that involves a woman running around screaming before she runs into something. Often this moment makes it into her trailers.

The humor is every gag we've seen in 15 or so years of post-Farrelly comedies, with nothing to really recommend confidence in that aspect, and that's absolutely defining. As for the story, I don't see enough here to judge but have been weary since Feig said they went with a reboot due to not being able to figure out the continuity needs (hey guys, you're professionals, we pay you money to figure out difficult things within your specific craft.)

The only thing that bugs me about the gender flip is how everybody's either praising it or going bugs*it about the feminist agenda it represents... but man, whatever. Gender flips aren't automatically feminist, unless it's really clumsy feminism. That aspect doesn't bother me in either direction.

Something of a shame. I'm past the point where even reboots bother me, as they're not even the new new. They're the old old, and they're as meaningless as any thing you could name. I'd just like them to have some sense of quality.

In the end, I may not see this in the theater and only watch it opportunistically, but I won't outright condemn it.

                            Re: Ghostbusters Trailer

A continuity story could have been fun, with Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver's daughter taking over the business because the original Ghostbusters are all getting too creaky. And she recruits her old college girl friends, because 'female intuition' is actually useful when busting ghosts.

That really does sound like the seed of a potentially good idea.

Which means it's a good idea, if that sounds a bit stern.

I think one thing that made the original so good... and really, that makes any high concept comedy good... is that Aykroyd was on the details, and he's really kind of loopy about that kind of thing. The world had a very lived in feel because there was a lot of actual pseudo-science behind it. If you played the game they made for PS3/360, every ghost had a story and classification, and all the extra weapons were redesigned by Aykroyd to fit that in-world science. It was a bit porn-y for Ghostbusters fans, at the end of the day.

So yeah, it would be nice if the Feig crew at least tried to follow through there. I appreciated the McKinnon poster with the custom stickers on her proton pack, but that's a very surface level version of what I'm talking about.

I ain't afraid of no trailer. (groan) I like everyone involved, so I definitely want to see this. I think it will be, or hope it will be, at the very least, amusing and fun. I won't compare it to the original, I'll just enjoy it for whatever it is.
