Exactly. I gave up a well paying job in San Francisco to move to LA to pursue a career in film. I had a dream... I always wanted to work in the movie business, and dag nam it I was going to do it!

I was dirt poor for while, spent all my savings very fast. It is very hard to break in if you have a full time job in somthing other than film BTW. Things move very fast and you must be available on a moments notice. If your have another job... the odds of getting a film job are very slim.

For young people to "break in" you will probably need to work for free (as an intern), or take a starting job that pays substandard wages. If you can get through a few years of that -- and it is not easy because there is no path, everyone must carve their own niche -- make some good connections, and hit a stride, then you can find yourself on a path to making good money.

Going into the film biz for the money, is like going into a band for the money. It has to be about the 'music', otherwise it is pointless and you will never find success. It takes years of work and very little income before most people can perfect their film biz 'music'.

I guess I was too dumb to realize there was a choice. As soon as I realized I wanted to write screenplays I researched what I needed to do to make a career of it. Everybody said to move to LA. So I moved to LA. I didn't have a job until I got here and I secured my apartment over the internet. I had never set foot in LA until I showed up at my new apartment with my then fiance in tow. I told him I was moving and if he wanted to be with me he had to come along.

No regrets about moving here. A few regrets about the fiance.

appreciate the thought though!

Well I'll see what I can do about turning around the economic situation in the entire united states so individuals stand a realistic chance at acquiring a job offer that will pass a board of review ... when you're not a medical or software specialist.

Yep - couldn't agree more.

Weird because I have met more than a few insane people in the biz. And defintiely some "down-syndrome normal face" people as well.

So nothing matters. As long as you can perform, or can produce the big $

I think the Robotard was referring to writers, who can afford to be neither.

For many other industry roles, though, insanity and retardation seem to be prerequisites.

Derek, thanks for that kickass post. I'm printing it out. I'm "making the move" this summer, so it'll help. Trying to score a job before I get there, but we'll see how that goes.

BDZ, thanks for starting this thread. Good stuff within.

Joe, it's my year too. Best of luck in yours.

SBScript, I like California. And I'm not just saying that because I plan to query you soon .

People who really want to make it often start by analyzing the success of those who have achieved the goal and are living the dream. What did they do? How did they do it? What can you do to emulate the choices they made in order to stack the deck in your favor?

The answer is pretty clear. Most people move to, and live in, LA.

A lot has been said under the banner of "telling the truth" ---which I think is a great thing--- but what about the ugly step child of 'moving to LA'?

What about the truth about age?

I'm caretaker to my elderly mother. I can't even think about moving to LA until life takes its course. My craft will be honed. I'll have contest wins under my belt. I have a friend who won an Oscar in 2009 who works on tent pole movies as a contact------ but------- I ain't gonna be a spring chicken.

So what's the truth about age?
