...where the female lead in a romcom is a kindergarten teacher. Seriously?

It's like a bunch of people got together in a room and said, So what would be a good profession for a woman that's cute and smart but non-threatening and shows that she is predisposed to, at some point, complying with her biological imperative to produce a younger, smaller version of herself? Let's narrow that down and then use it in every movie out of two!

    Be more original than that!

    Right.

Instead, let's have her torture the children in a dungeon, under the school, that she dug with own clawed hands. Here love interest could be a sicko who slices and dices puppies, but he's just not cruel enough for her. Eventually the guy she really falls for is a predator that gratifies himself with grannies in nursing homes, then brings them home as the main course in "tasteful" dinners for his kindergarten teacher.

The saving grace of this "romcom" is that neither one of them has the biological imperative to produce younger, smaller versions of themselves.

Wouldn't that be loads of fun?

Or... since romcoms are called romcoms because they do follow a certain formula, you might want to avoid watching them altogether.

I have no idea what movie you're talking about -- please share.

Also you make it sound like the male professions are so much more diverse. I think "advertising/PR something something" is the main professor for any protag in a romantic comedy.

That's why my last script I made up a whole career and job to make it more fun.

Some little movie with Jason Sudeikis, doesn't really matter. As I said, it just seems like such a go-to profession for a young woman in a romcom because it checks a lot of the right boxes. But even without getting into that aspect, it's just lazy writing in my opinion. Giving your character a more interesting or unusual job is a great way to put them in some good and original situations. And yeah the same can be said for men's professions too.

I can only think of Meet The Parents and Kindergarten Cop that feature that off the top of my head FYI. And one of those women is Arnold.

Also every time I spell it out and say it, I want it to be Kinder-GARDEN.

I know, I hate spelling that word. There was also MUST LOVE DOGS. And some others. It's just one of those professions where, when it's revealed, I'm not surprised. And it usually adds very little to the story. Interior designer is another popular one for women. It implies artsy in a likeable way.

I know this observation my be out of place in the modern, "PC" world, but there are actually women who like kids, want to be around them and maybe want to have their own babies at some point. I'm kind of thankful for that, since you and I wouldn't be here unless our mothers wanted babies.

But honestly, I think there are more women being cast as super heroes than kindergarten teachers these days.

Yeah, selecting a job for a character is tough. The job has to relate in some significant way to the plot, unless the job is purely incidental and could have been anything at all.

It's got nothing to do with PC, there are plenty of shows and films about parenthood and family. I just find it unoriginal and artificially designed to make the character likeable and non-threatening (salary, intellect, etc.).

It has the added bonus of introducing something cute to further add likeability to the protagonist. Kindergarten teacher = cute little kids. Or an Animal rescue person = cute dog. Have a cantakerous malcontent like Jack Nicholson? Show him with a cute dog.

I admit I enjoy all those rom com traditions. Usually in a beautiful advertising company that seems to have these ultra modern multi-million dollar spaces. A beautiful apartment that you wouldn't think someone starting out can afford. A best friend that seems super good looking to be just a best friend that you don't notice could be a potential romantic mate. And of all the professions, Kindergarten teacher is one of those I respect the most. Firefighter. Astronaut. Pet rescue worker. I don't have any problem with these conventional jobs. It's really the characters, their quirks and the journey they take. Oh, and the dialogue. Got to have witty banter.

Number one is writers/reporters/journalism. Writers like nothing more than to make characters well writers...

The West Wing was written by a great writer. And I've watch each episode 5-7 times or more on some and if you think about it, he elevates the writers to the policy makers which is just not accurate. He's got like 5 people doing the job of 100 and they all stay at their job way longer than in real life.

I think there was a year like half a dozen projects were doing that. More in the vein of they were amateurs trying to make their first porn.
