  • Your Top Three Directors

Not sure if this is the right place for this thread or if it's been done before but I was thinking of those few Directors that consistently hit the nail on the head EVERYTIME.

Of course this is all subjective but I'm interested to see which names come up the most.

    My personal picks...

    1) Edgar Wright- Gets it right all the time IMO.

    2) Ben Affleck- Can do no wrong behind the camera. From Gone, Baby, Gone to Argo.

    3) Quentin Tarantino- Just my opinion, but I pity the fool who doesn't appreciate Mr.T's work.

Close calls include, Ridley, Joss, Cameron and Fincher based on track record but not everyone can fit into the top three.

    1) James Cameron
    2) Christopher Nolan
    3) David Fincher

But more-so the top two because they also write their own stuff.

Well, my top 3 directors would be:

      - Stanley Kubrick (Paths of Glory, 2001 A Space Odyssey, The Shining)
      - Yasujiro Ozu (Tokyo Story, Floating Weeds, Late Autumn)
      - Harmony Korine (Gummo, Trash Humpers, shorts)

That's different than what my favorite 3 directors are. But people who make consistently good movies every time...

      - Stanley Kubrick
      - James Cameron
      - Quentin Tarantino

          Hitchcock

But yeah...Edgar Wright gets a few more under his belt, and I'll reconsider...

            Tarantino
            Paul Thomas Anderson

I like too many other directors the same amount to pick a clear 3rd.

              1. James Cameron
              2. Quentin Tarantino (I don't count Death Proof)
              3. Yoshihiro Nakamura

If you make me count Death Proof, then I'd switch out Tarantino with Brad Bird.

                        Of all time:

                        "American"

                        Hitchcock
                        Kubrick
                        Peckinpah and Ford

                        "Foreign"

                        Kurosawa
                        Renoir
                        Bergman

                        Alive/working

                        Mann
                        David Fincher
                        3rd place split between
                        Tarantino, Steve Soderbergh and Scorsese.

Scorsese still works, but not enough for me to really truly consider him in that category.

Once upon a time Ridley Scott and Spielberg were on that list. Still great, but their output in the last 10 years... meh.

Honorable Mention for the active directors.
                        Danny Boyle
                        Wes Anderson
                        Alexander Payne
                        Christopher Nolan
