Re: Movie/TV show that doesn't hold up...

I still love "Blazing Saddles," but "Young Frankenstein" is a work of art. So funny, great gags plus wonderful music and cinematography. You probably know this, but Mel Brooks used the same set from the original "Frankenstein," it was just a stroke of luck it had been preserved.

"History of the World Pt 2" is also a favorite, the Inquisition water ballet? Genius and guts to pull that off.

I can't bear "Caddyshack" (then or now), it's like it was shot on a different comedy planet, just bizarre, I don't get the fans of that movie.

I've been on a Goldie Hawn kick lately, she's so good, looking forward to her mini-comeback with Amy Schumer. Just watched "Housesitter," love that movie!

Diehard "I Love Lucy" fan, there's something I don't admit to most people. Great scripts, always funny, never tire of watching it.

      The Bourne Trilogy
I still like the films (didn't see the new one) but they're so steeped in 00's politics that they feel like time capsules. I think they're going to end up like all those gritty 70s paranoia thrillers: well-received when they were new but now considered passe and trite. It's one of the reasons why none of the Bourne films reached the iconic status of the early Bonds or even Casino Royale: they lacked the timelessness of that franchise and were going for immediacy as opposed to longevity.

I saw "The Six Million Dollar Man' the other day or rather watched about ten minutes. I loved Lee majors and the character when I was a kid... now I laugh how wooden he is and silly the situation was. They had him investigating moonshiners. When I grew up I thought I remembered him fighting robots, Bigfoot and KGB agents. Why would you send an astronaut who is one of two people on the planet with working bionic limbs that grant him power and speed after dime a dozen moonshiners? Wouldn't that be a case for some undercover sheriff or fed or even Charlie's Angels? Gross mis-use of a superhuman astronaut if you ask me. Maybe due to budget cuts he's the only one at his agency anymore so that's why they send him everywhere.

Hey, how about the most over-used plot of TV shows during the 60's, 70's and 80's... the main character loses his/her memory and ends up helping some poor farmer with a good looking daughter, some good looking single mom who holds down two jobs (this is before current economy) or a small business owner that happens to be good looking and single who is being strong armed. This happened once a season on 90% of the shows on TV back in the day. Am I right? I don't miss that. As a kid though I ate it up with a spoon.

Here's something funny. When I was growing up my mother acted like "Three's Company" was straight up porn and wouldn't allow us to see it. Try watching it now. Then watch "American Dad" or "Family Guy" or The New Girl" etc etc... all played on any given channel in reruns at lunch time. I'd say she had no idea what the future held.

i think that some shows hold up over time because over time you remember your dad (or mom) liked it, and you watched the show with him/her/them, or with your first girlfriend, etc, during yonder ago times and time tends to keep rolling on, and in the snap of a finger, a once young viewer (you) is now a middle-aged or close to it viewer and sees their own kid watching what you watched as a kid, while watching with now old mom/dad, etc., who still enjoy the show, but who now nap through the episode.

some shows, the below to me, never get dated.

            the old charlie brown specials.

            old gunsmoke episodes.

            etc.

movies and shows that 'hold up' could be much more personal to the individual watcher than the ones that don't.

I get what you're saying with it being personal if a movie holds up, but I think it has more to do with the story and the execution of that story. Some films are so strongly 80's in look & fashion that it's distracting but other films you don't feel that. "The Exorcist" was a 70's film and it stands the test of time completely. Several movies have this quality while others seem to be a time capsule of that exact year and fashion even though they were hits in that particular year. Again, I saw "Officer & A Gentleman" which was early 80's recently and enjoyed it completely decades later. I saw "Teen Wolf" a few years back with my kid and winced yet that was a hit at the time and I liked it as a kid.

Speaking of Michael J Fox... I saw "Back To The Future" at some point of late and it still holds up. I saw his serious drama turn "Bright Lights, Big City" on cable and thought it was ridiculous BUT when it came out 20 plus years ago I saw it in the theater and thought it was relevant.

In terms of Charlie Brown I only like the Great Pumpkin and The Thanksgiving one. Even as a kid it was those 2 because something happened and they started getting surreal and even sad in tone.

THE EXORCIST stands the test of time with me, too.

i was supposed to meet a girl on a friday night at a drive-in theater, she stood me up, and i ended up watching most of it from the doorway of the concession stand because i didn't have the courage to watch it in my old scout 4X4 by myself in an almost empty lot.

                personal connection to that movie.

i have personal connections to all of the movies my family would drive 60 miles to watch in a theater once a month after church on Sunday before we'd go out to eat somewhere my dad could afford and then we'd head back home.

whether i liked the movies or not, or how much i liked them, they all hold up. to me. actually i can't remember any of them i don't like. some i just like more.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Man, I used to love that show! Joss Whedon was one of my heroes! I tried watching a few episodes on Netflix and they were a chore to get through. I started to notice the bad acting, cheesy music, and how silly it all seemed (even when that was point).

Still love Firefly though... (I would have loved it even more if Joss Whedon had cast some actual Asians in it)...

Anconranger, you might be onto something because many films from the 80's and 90's that I saw in the theater I remember even the person I was with. Good dates or bad dates or just with friends. It takes you back to that moment. Hate to say it but if and when the theaters go kids will lose out on memories. I have a difficult time getting my kids to sit through anything which brings us to...

Yeah, early Buffy's are hard to watch. I'm always looking for stuff for my 12 year old to watch so I pushed her watching that (my wife was/is a way bigger fan. I just watched it sporadically). Having lived in that time period and watched the occasional episode I find it not very enjoyable anymore. My kid didn't even really care for it and it was a major "girl power" show in the 90's. I can say it picked up a bit in quality, story line and acting around season 3, but somewhere around season 5 we gave up. The Buffy character itself became to serious and depressing. Granted she fictionally was exposed to a lot of hardship and angst.

However, I can, and have sat through Buffy of late. Try watching the X-files. And I used to be a fan! In my opinion a lot of the shows in the 90's seem to pick up steam in the middle of the run. If you got rid of the growing pains of the first 2 seasons and subtracted the awful phoning it in last season you'd have a solid good couple of seasons that stand the test of time. I saw a 6th season episode of X-files when I visited grandparent in hospital last Winter. it was watchable but not great. This Summer I tried to watch a first season episode and would rather have mowed the lawn. Bad TV.

On one of the mostly unused cable channels I have they have been playing that 90's sitcom "Wings." In my twenties I watched it and enjoyed it. Not even close to as much as I liked "Seinfeld" but I regularly watched it during that era and thought it was funny enough. I saw it the other day and didn't find it funny at all. Maybe it was that particular one... so I watched another one the next day and thought it was stale. You could see the jokes coming a mile away. I disliked the "Lull" character Thomas Hayden Church played but 20 plus years ago I didn't think that.

Wings!! Haven't thought of that one in quite a while. I watched it back in the day and thought it was pretty good then. Probably wouldn't feel that way now though. Most 90's stuff just doesn't seem to hold up that well. Not like the 70's/80's stuff.

I heard this from someone who probably got it from someone else, but things tend to go from current to dated to kitschy to classic. 90s movies aren't old enough to make the "classic" category yet, so unless they were really extraordinary they just feel dated with some kitsch appeal.

I think what you heard might be true, Omjs.

In reference to "Wings" I heard Steven Webber ( The "Brian" character) on a podcast and he said "Wings was a solid utility show. Nothing more. Nothing less." I was surprised by this statement from the star. This was before my recent 2 viewings. Going on memory I thought he was downplaying the fun and success of the show. I liked it. I even watched it with my mom and whatever girlfriend I had at the time. Then I saw it again 20 years later, as I mentioned in an above post, and I grasped immediately what he meant. It felt flat and there was nothing special about it other then setting up the jokes of one dimensional characters. So going on the process Omjs mentioned I will probably come around again to liking it again in 10 to 12 years.

Fawlty Towers (1975 (season 1) and 1979 (season 2)) is still hilarious. If you have never seen the show, it's worth a look.

I love Wings, just watched some episodes from seasons 3 and 4 on DVD. I don't see what's flat about it, I think it's a very entertaining show. Maybe a little too reliant on jokes, but they're funny!

Great writing for oddball Lowell. Crystal Bernard's Helen has depth, and they give her lots of physical comedy to work with. All the women characters are interesting and central to the show, not just foils for the guys. Tony Shalhoub's accent is a little ridiculous sometimes but he still nails the laughs.

Plus I love a workplace comedy set in a small New England airport, they make the most of the setting and local culture.

And Tim Daly and Steven Weber are a fun team plus nice eye candy too.

Ken Levine sometimes talks about the show on his blog and experiences working on it.
