I want somebody to explain the evolutionary advantage of those little helicopter lizard things. Surely getting yourself all dizzy isn't useful in evading a predator.

On a side note, Avatar has ruled the box office for a 7th straight weekend in a row. Pretty tidy effort!

        AVATAR - $2 billion...

And domestic drop off was only 14% in weekend 7... which means it is still going strong.

        Will it make $3 billion?

LOL, I took my mother to see the movie today (my second viewing. The house was still pretty packed) and I thought the SAME EXACT thing. You took the words right out of my mouth.

Yep, officially over 2 billion now:

            Domestic: $594,472,000 29.2%

            + Foreign: $1,444,750,000 70.8%

            = Worldwide: $2,039,222,000

            And it's still going strong...

Less than 7 million away from Titanic's domestic record as well.

Where will it end? Closer to 3 billion than 2 billion I suspect. You can't rule out 3 billion either.

I can't help but go back to the original post by snrwrist: 'this will underwhelm at the box office' Lol.

That's not to say I'm not interested in seeing it or it won't be good...I just don't think it will have quite the mainstream appeal that the studio is expecting. I know many people who aren't really interested in seeing this film and I think it appeals more to a niche audience--Cameron fans and sci-fi fans.
Yeah, that is a tad off.

I'd posted a link to the guy that trashed the PHANTOM MENACE doing his AVATAR review (2 parts on youtube). Entertaining.

What really kills me about all this is constant attempts to dispute Avatar's box-office take.

It's either "inflated ticket prices this" or..."adjusting for inflation compared to 1950's that". What's the deal people? Sour Grapes, if I had to wager a guess.

I get it. The are a lot of struggling writers here, and I understand it's hard to get excited about someone ELSE'S success, but the vitriol is getting out of control. Whatever way you look at it, AVATAR is a worldwide smash. The #1 film of all time. We're witnessing box-office history!

How can anyone NOT be excited?

                  I'm waiting for 'accounting error.'

I haven't seen the film yet - more by accident than design. I'm now timing my run so that my ticket is the one that takes it past the $2B mark.

It's already past 2 billion, maybe you should time it for 3 billion?

My theory on all of this (and I have a script tip on it about TITANIC) is that you can either spend your energy trying to find all of the reasons why popular films suck... or try to figure out why people like them and are buying all of those tickets and then apply that to your screenplay.

I think it's weird when people look at what obviously works (or what is required for success) and reject it. That's self destructive behavior. A chimpanzee looks at what works and duplicates those actions - and you'd think screenwriters are smarter than chimps.
