  • Carrot and stick

    hey all-

had a meeting recently with a producer I love and it raised an interesting question...

let's say there's a novel you are obsessed with adapting and you bring it to a producer's attention in a general meeting. he/she is intrigued. the conversation veers away from the novel and lands on a project the producer needs a writer for. you show interest in the room, the producer sends you the material to look over.

how do you juggle responding to the producer's material with your own project?

if their idea doesn't set your world on fire and you reply with a respectful "not for me... but how about we do my project instead?" are you DOA?

or is it a case of you pushing to write the producer's project, and concurrently pushing your own agenda?

just trying to figure out what the smartest strategy would be...

If you have a rep, certainly don't turn down things yourself. That's their job. It's also their job to say "But what did you think about the book idea Travis brought you?"

If you don't have a rep, there's really no harm in politely declining and asking about the book.

Neither blackballs you with them. If anything it makes you more desirable.

Just for future reference: *Carrot on a stick*.

          hey Prof.
yes I use my reps to turn something down- but I guess I was wondering more about the "emotional subtleties" in this kind of situation... whether closing the door on one project will inevitably cool the relationship down and affect the other project also.

There's nothing wrong with turning something down. No one takes it personally. As I mentioned, if anything it makes them want you more. It's definitely better than going after something you're not into. That can certainly affect a relationship.

                Nah, just carrot sticks.
                Or crudités, perhaps?
