So if you write a pilot in the vein of Fleabag will it look like you're just trying to rip off that "breaking the fourth wall" style ?

Re: Fleabag
Breaking the fourth wall is nothing new, of course. It's been done in film and TV for years & years to one degree or another. Obviously, Phoebe Waller-Bridge's "voice," point of view and style are what sets that show apart from so much else.
It would probably look like you are trying to jump on the current success of FLEABAG's breaking the fourth wall and thus "borrowing" too heavily from it, since it's the show du jour.
Now that doesn't mean that you shouldn't give it a try. Maybe it turns out brilliantly and is at worse a great writing sample. I'd tend to think, though, numerous other writers are trying to jump on that same FLEABAG band wagon right now; but (hopefully) people are looking more for an original voice like Waller-Bridge's, with a different spin on how the stories are done/presented.Last edited by Done Deal Pro; 08-05-2019, 03:31 PM.

Re: Fleabag
yeah, it's less the convention than PWB is so damn good at writing her characters and dialogue. she could have easily scripted the asides as V.O. in Fleabag's head that the audience hears (which is how Peep Show did it, equally funny). the fourth-wall breaking does become an eventual plot point but it's the writing itself that keeps a viewer binging the show
