And yet, I will say, without any data to back this up, that I think female screenwriters are more attractive than male screenwriters. Not saying they are succeeding because of their looks but even there, a bias may be at work.

I hope it's not. My ego needs that after Nicholls.

I'm not familiar with that reference.

But saying that female writers are only getting ahead because of their looks is very condescending and destructive for a forum that's supposed to be supporting other writers.

Yes, because if female writers are getting ahead because of a bias, then you don't have to work to improve yourself at all. Everything you write is genius, but those judges can't see it because they're staring at boobies.

Do you seriously think that's what I said? Go back, re-read, try again.

Look, you guys, OBVIOUSLY this business is biased toward women. That's why there are so many more professional female screenwriters than male ones, and they get paid so much more on average.

For me, the takeaway quote was this:

"I had no idea what I was doing directing," she said. "I'm not the most assertive person, and you have to be able to make demands to be an effective director. On 'Ricki,' people were like, 'You don't want to direct again?' And I was like, 'No, I'm out. I want to work with somebody who is incredibly capable and not go off and ... it up, which is what I would do."

In all the 100,000 articles that have been published in the past year pushing the narrative of how biased Hollywood is against women (ie. why there are so few female directors) Diablo is the first person I've seen to actually just give an honest answer, free of gender politics, and I commend her for it.

Diablo Cody has astutely pointed out that Channing Tatum has hardly received any backlash or stigma from the fact that he was a stripper before gaining celebrity in large part because of that experience.

It's interesting to see how Diablo Cody's distinct personality, and the way that informs her voice as a writer, has elevated her in a way that you normally only see from writers who also direct. But I think it's a mistake to try to frame Cody's successes and failures around one small (albeit provocative) facet of her young life that is nothing in comparison to the fact that she wrote a script as revelatory as JUNO.
