What are some of the best contests to enter?

  • #2
    contests

Opinions will vary, but the consensus seems to be that the top ones are:

    Nicholl
    Disney
    Cheterfield
    Austin
    Sundance

There are a number of fine second-tiers, too.

Lots of information on all the screenwriting contests can be found at www.moviebytes.com

    Happy hunting.

Those listed above are by far the most prestigious but, not necessarily the best b/c thousands of excellent writers enter these contests and you have to be better than thousands to win. Most of these also don't offer written feedback probably b/c they're too overwhelmed. I suggest you check out the list at moviebytes too. ie - Sometimes a local contest (where you have to be a resident to enter) is your best chance.

      Gamble On!

What about the Cannes Golden Plume contest? Is that legitimate and/or affiliated with Cannes Film Festival at all?

        Many thanks.

          Re: Best contest to enter?

Do you want to win a contest? Or forward a career?

If you want to get the attention of people in the industry, entering the Pittsburgh Screenwriting Contest will do you no good.

Nicholl, Austin, Page and Final Draft Big Break draw thousands of entries, but you're competing against tens of thousands of wannabe screenwriters and thousands of pro writers. So, if a field of 6,000 scares you off...

If you want to see how your work stacks up, enter one of the four contests mentioned earlier. Doing well in one of those...and by well, a winner or finalists...MAY get you read by industry pros.

          Good luck.

The best contest to enter right now would be the Fourteenth Annual Halloween Short Script Writing Contest.

Just 8 pages by October 31.

Don't mean to toot our own horn, but-

"LiveRead/LA: the best screenwriting contest you've never heard of"

Agreeing with @NikeeGoddess: smaller/local contest with insightful feedback is the way to go... depending on what you think your odds are of winning "the big ones." For us, we're more about becoming a better writer through the writing process(getting feedback from our Industry Insider/ fellow writers) and community(events, workshops.) All of this stems from hearing your writing read out live by professional actors; it really does make a difference....

-- Your question is too vague, though I assume you're talking about a contest that would be the best to enter to get you and your script noticed by the Industry, which would be the Nicholl Fellowship.

There are other reasons for a writer to enter a specific contest:

What's the best contest to enter a High Concept script?
What's the best contest to enter a broad comedy?
What's the best contest to enter for a money prize?
What's the best contest to enter for feedback?
What's the best "small-middle" size contests to enter?

These small-middle size contests would be for a new writer to enter. These contests would have 1,000 to 3,000 entries instead of 7,000 that the Nicholl would have. The idea is that with a smaller contest the new writer would be competing with other new writers and not more experienced writers where the chances to advance would be greater.

Yes, I'm aware the winners, or at least the majority of winners of these small contests will not impress the Industry people when they read about the win in a query.

The goal is to build confidence in a new writer. To see how you, the writer, stack up against other new writers. To see if you're in the cream of the crop of future writers.

Confidence for a writer is very important because you'll need this to withstand all the future rejection you (writer) will undoubtedly have heaped upon you.

                      Re: Best contest to enter?

There's only a few days left to enter, but the Goldmine contest is small and therefore may offer the best odds at helping you achieve your goals (finding representation, etc.).

On the surface, it's more of a UK- and TV-centric opportunity, but it may be worthwhile to read up on it and decide for yourselves - but do so quickly. I'm a Canuck (Canadian, for those who don't know what that is) and I've entered before, partly because I have a few UK-set scripts. But that isn't a requirement, at all.
