I hated it, but was glad I read it.

Absolutely. I found it an interesting, engaging read. Having said that, *never* buy books about writing thinking they're going to teach you how to write. Whatever you do, don't buy into the huge Screenwriting Guru industry that bilks hopeful wannabes out of millions of dollars every year. Take all the money you would spend on gurus and workshops and seminars, put into the bank and sit down and write. You can only learn by doing.

        Cheers,

I thought it was worth reading, but it's not a book I return to time and again like I do others.

This one is okay, at best. Better than most of the others. It serves a purpose very early on in your development as a writer. You really shouldn't hang on every word. Just absorb what you think is good for you and ignore the rest. Same as with anything else. But at some point, you have to ignore these books and learn how to trust your own instincts. The sooner, the better.

This is my advice really for any screenwriting books. See if your local library has it and borrow it.

I would also check out on "On Story" from the Austin Film Festival. Great interviews with the pros and insight on every genre:

Right now I'm reading, "Cut to the Chase" edited by Linda Venis from the UCLA Writer's Extension Program. Just started it but so far pretty basic and yet, an easy and informative read. Link from Amazon:

KcKee is a snake oil salesman. He as no comedic sense what so ever and it is reflected in his lack of writing voice.

Scriptshadow is also a fraud. An unbelievable fraud.

                Go with William Martell.

Apart from reading lots and lots of scripts, I highly recommend STORY SENSE by Paul Lucey. It's a very underrated book that provides a lot of helpful information.
