He was picking up from where the '51 version left off.

Is there any evidence that the thing was not building it the entire time it was there?

the minute I heard the synopsis for The Island, I recalled Clonus and knew there was a lawsuit brewing.
          The similarities make ya wonder.

Also there were some monster-sized hole in the plot.
          What?

I love The Thing but I don't think the plot is complicated enough for holes.

Some stuff is left unexplained but I think it works. I don't need every little detail wrapped up like a Scooby Doo conclusion.

I like the little unexplained mysteries. It's the stuff fan boys debate when drunk. Who's shredded underwear was in MacReady's furnace? Where was Childs and is he a thing?
Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

Why is Childs wearing a different coat when he shows up at the end?

I honestly find new information every single time I watch that damn movie. It's a miracle of film-making.

think the movie's influential because of the scope of the world and ideas, not necessarily that it's a tight script. The anime movie "Akira" is kind of like that. It's animation (at the time) was mindblowing, unique, influential. The ideas in the movie were huge. But what's the core story about really? Hard to tell. Pretty much nonexistent..
Strangely even though Otomo was adapting his own work he managed to f-up the story when adapting it. The way they did it was pretty much follow the the first 2 books verbatim and then skip forward to the very end of the resolution of the 6th book. So that's why the story doesn't make a whole lot of sense, which is definitely a major failing of the movie.
