Well Fiddle Dee Dee.
It's an adpatation of a novel of course, but running time was less of a concern back in the day.
For some great, but long films, one could also look at the David Lean 3-Pack: Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia and Dr. Zhivago. James Cameron doesn't come in that long, but longer than most these days.
Getting to the point, the characters are engaging, both the good characters and the bad AND the supporting characters. All of these are very personal stories set against a backdrop of a major event (Gone with the Wind and the three David Lean masterpieces all set during wars). All the protags have serious internal struggles and issues.
What are some other personal stories set against major events in the background and tend to be a bit longer than most films:
Ben Hur
Patton
Gandhi
Titanic
Gladiator
Forrest Gump
Braveheart
What do all of these also have in common...All are winners for Best Picture.

90% of people in the 1930's went to the movies at least once a week -- shocking, isn't it. There was no other form of (good / family) entertainment. That being said, there's nothing you can gain from it to help you in the modern movie market.I'm never wrong. Reality is just stubborn.

Titanic learned a lot from the romance and spectacle elements of GWTW, just as one recent example
For whatever its faults in political terms, it's a timeless story told on a grand scale
