Question How to use INTERCUT:

I'm trying to cut back and forth between several different locations in a house. My understanding is that after the first location is established, I can use "INTERCUT:" and then put a slugline for a second location. After doing this, I would only need to use the description text to indicate the location rather than more sluglines. Is this correct?

Also, how would I go about adding a third location at a later point in the action? Do I use "INTERCUT:" again followed the third location slugline?

I've never heard of INTERCUT being used for anything except phone calls etc.

See http://www.oscars.org/sites/oscars/f...riptsample.pdf

If you just want to jump around from room to room in a house, you can just use slug lines:

Quote:
INT. HOUSE - DAY

blah blah blah

TO LIVING ROOM

blah blah blah

TO KITCHEN

blah blah blah

TO BEDROOM

blah blah blah

TO LIVING ROOM

blah blah blah
The big difference, as I see them, is that with INTERCUT you do only the initial identification of the locations/sources, and then go back and forth between the speakers. With the SLUGS you can go back and forth but have to identify each one every time.

Establish the first scene with a SLUG and Action and (or) Dialogue.

Establish the second scene with a SLUG and Action, and (or) Dialogue.

Right justify “INTERCUT:” before the resumption of the first scene.

Jump back and forth between scenes without using SLUG lines.

Personally, I right justify treating it like a Transition – which essentially it is. A left justified “INTERCUT PHONE CONVERSATION:” or “INTERCUT BATTLE SCENES:” works fine.

I’ve never used or seen a third scene added to the mix. But, what the heck, go for it. Since clarity is important, I suggest:

Establish the third scene with a SLUG and Action, and (or) Dialogue.

Right justify “INTERCUT THREE SCENES:” before the resumption of the first or second scenes.

Jump back and forth to your creative heart’s content.

You can Intercut any scenes you want.

INTERCUT's certainly been used that way for phone conversations. I've used it for 3- or 4-way in a conference call.

Well then, how did you format it?

INT. LOCATION 1 - DAY

blah, blah, blah

SPEAKER 1
(into phone)
Speaker 2, you there? We're
bringing in Speaker 3, too.

INT. LOCATION 2 (SAME TIME)

blah, blah, blah

SPEAKER 2
(into phone)
I'm here. Speaker 3, you here?

INT. LOCATION 3 (SAME TIME)

blah, blah, blah

SPEAKER 3
(into phone)
All set. So what's going on?

INTERCUT - THE THREE SPEAKERS at LOCATION 1, LOCATION 2, LOCATION 3

SPEAKER 1
We won a million dollars.

SPEAKER 2
Is that all?

SPEAKER 3
I thought it'd be a billion, at least.

etc. etc.

SPEAKER 1
Okay. Talk to you later.

END INTERCUT.

The police burst into the room, as Speaker 1 hangs up.
