![]() Anyone know where I can get a list of production company names? I know
someone who wants to set up a small produc company but wants to make sure the produc name isn't used. I know when registering for website, you know if that name is taken or not, however, a company could be set up with that name and not have a website. Any ideas on how to go about this? |

![]() I have an LLC set up for my project, but it's just for this particular film. Should I just do a DBA for my "production company" which will be the same with each project or do I need to do like an s or something else? My hub has a consulting company whichi is an s so we could do a dba under that, no? My goal is to avoid a bunch of additional filing fees because we've got the llc costs (500) plus the blue sky fees for a few states (500 at least I think). I want to get the umbrella prod co up and going so we can put it in the website, credits, etc. I know this isn't a big deal, but I was just stewwing about it and wanted to ask you guys. Thanks in advance.

![]() You're talking about sole proprietorship? I'm not sure if it's any better than
a doing-business-as company or not? I think it sort of depends what you want to do with the company. If you are thinking big, then you should incorporate and put yourself under a corporate umbrella. For now, however, you should be fine with a dba. Charli |

![]() Yea, I'll incorporate eventually, but I'll just do a dba or something for right now. Thanks.

![]() I did some research on this a few months ago. If you intend to do ongoing business as the company, one sign of credibility is having the money up front and the dedication as a business to take all the proper steps to be registered. That's one thing my (could be) partners and I discussed. If we want someone to trust us with their money and their talent, we need to show that we're up to it. Take the time to draft a business plan, write down goals, etc. The difference between a hobby venture and a company. If you're going to do business as anything other than yourself, you need to file.
Another thing you might do, in addition to checking the business registry, is Google the name as a phrase. We chose a different name because the name we had been considering belongs to someone in another state. We could legally use the name, but you never know how big things will grow. It might be a wise move if things are booming 10 or 20 years from now. |

![]() We'll do an LLC for each project so the "professional" looking taking-the-project seriously part is handled individually. We'll do a business plan for each project because a lot of the elements change and each approach is different. Lordy, who knew all this stuff I snoozed thru in college would be so important now. We've got a great team and a great attorney, so we're moving right along. Thanks for the info!
