    Re: Best musicals

Showboat is WAY better than Kiss Me Kate. (And I've even been in KMK.)

OK, follow-up question: What made these musicals good?

              What makes these musicals good?

Talented people, Colorful spectacle, Show stoppin' tunes, A welcome dearth of anal rape, and lots an' lots of DANCIN'

                  Re: Best musicals

Considering the whole question is like asking, "Which is the best veneral disease?" I'm amazed it's gone on for three pages.

That being said, I was always more partial to Fred Astaire movies. Daddy Long Legs is one of my favorites, but I think it's because I had a thing for Leslie Caron when I was a kid.

                    Singin in the Rain
                    The Sound of Music
                    Music Man (the old version)
                    Guys and Dolls
                    South Pacific
Wizard of Oz, which I don't really consider a musical
                    Muppet Movie, same deal
                    Grease, I guess
                    Little Mermaid
                    Jungle Book
                    Beauty and the Beast

Mary Poppins drives me absolutely batty. UGH!

I can't believe no one has said West Side Story, but actually it's not on my list because I've never seen it all the way through. (egads!)

Singing in the rain, Chicago, Moulin Rouge...

I HATED every minute of West Side Story... no idea why it's a favorite for my sister, she usually has such great taste.

                          Anything Goes
An American In Paris (shame on the lot of you for neglecting this)
                          On The Town
Funny Girl--Streisand at her very, very best.

the best bad musical ever: Xanadu--the Road House of Musicals

Grease 2 rivals Xanadu as best cheesy musical.
