Re: Which Genre Tends To Dissappoint You The Most?
Definitely comedy.
Opinion alert!
It's a difficult genre to write for, fraught with taboos and restrictions. It's a shame, comedy is one of the best genres to push boundaries. Instead it's been diluted with the safest (read: boring) and most basic elements.
This is why I respect movies like The Hangover. It did push boundaries, made us squirm and laugh at the same time, while dealing with subject matter that in another genre would have been too difficult a pill to swallow comfortably.

Horror, I'm a big horror guy, but most of the ones out nowdays focus solely on the gore, body count. Story and character are an afterthought."We all pay for life with death, so everything in between should be free.-- The Late Great Bill Hicks...

Comic book/super hero movies. Not sure if i've ever really enjoyed even one. They're all pretty much lame &/or boring.
Ppl will say, "oh, this is a good one!", but when I see it, it turns out to be just mediocre at best.
Animated family movies. FINDING NEMO and UP are the only 2 I've actually enjoyed. All the others are overrated.
Horror. Very predictable, no char development.Last edited by Laura Reyna; 07-12-2011, 10:34 AM.

Without a doubt, horror.
Comedy -- I've learned to accept that there only one or two good ones a year. I'm okay with that.
Action -- Special Effects these days are astounding but the story and dialogue are typically weak.
Thriller -- never cared too much for this category anyway.
Sci-Fi -- for every Moon there's a dozen crappy ones but the good outweigh the bad.
Horror -- absolutely the worst. I haven't seen a decent horror film in probably over a decade.

Re: Which Genre Tends To Dissappoint You The Most?
they aren't a genre per se, but tentpole films are the easiest ones to let me down. i see a great big idea in a trailer or movie poster or commercial blip and think to myself: "wow, this is going to be so awesome"; and then (at times) the film will turn out to be all about a couple key trailer moments and cgi-heavy stuff to impress an underage demographic. i don't see films to be impressed by video game theatrics (although they do enhance the experience); i see films for great emotional stories.
in many ways, i feel like 'over 25' audiences haven't been pulling back from film-watching because of tivo/cable/netflix etc so much as they've been driven out by studio-conscious choices to pursue dollars earned via lawn-mowing and babysitting gigs. i've followed the boards for awhile now and seen this or that comment that films are making more money year-over-year - but truthfully now... how much of that is actually due more to crafty business decisions, increased showings, good placement of showings, or higher ticket prices? are there really more butts in the seats?life happens

Re: Which Genre Tends To Dissappoint You The Most?
Agree hands down: comedy, comedy, comedy. Dying is easy...
Conversely
Horror, being killed or killing interestingly, haunting being haunted interestingly is seemingly becoming less and less easy. Think of once prolific horror directors like John Carpenter, Wes Craven not all their stuff was gold, but for awhile they turned out influential work. These days there are directors like Nakata, Balaguero and PLaza still out there but even then non-splatter non-torture horror seems just hard to develop. I don't know why. There's plenty of scary, creepy dark sh!t to mine and get into. I mean if the world were free of horrific things and potentially horrific things, DDers would all agree in threads. Republicans and Democrats would be holding hands during sessions. Children would be nightmare free.
Do audiences really want horror though? Things are messed up. The economy is a nightmare. Horror can offer escape. Nothing like creating a horror and then having the protag surviving and then conquering the horror.
But torture horror becomes the go to lately at least for American directors.
