  • The Tourist

The two most popular actors on the face of the planet must do something credible before the entire audience walks out of the theater.

From the Academy Award Winner of THE LIVES OF OTHERS comes the worst follow-up in the history of cinema.

I believe Richard Kelly would beg to differ.

The trailer didn't hint at the drivel you were about to experience

Put this movie on mute though and I can just watch Jolie all day.

You know, I watched OUT OF SIGHT again yesterday and it really reaffirmed that you just never know who will have chemistry. Who knew that Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney would have amazing chemistry and Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie would have absolutely none? I wonder if CASINO ROYALE would have been a bad film if Eva Green was never cast and some lame actress like Olivia Wilde played Vesper.

              Re: The Tourist

My sister actually bought the DVD for The Tourist. I was kinda "meh" about the whole thing - I think Depp was going through the motions and there was no chemistry between them (despite the plot requiring there to be some for it to even be believable).

Jolie had her moments in this, but it sure was no Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

This film suffers from so many problems, it's not even worth trying to tally them all. But I will say one of the bigger ailments of THE TOURIST was the casting of Depp. I love Johnny and will pretty much give an film he's in a chance...but one look at his filmography and you'll note he's not well versed in playing "normal," i.e. your average joe protag.

He seems most comfortable immersing himself in the lunacy of Hunter S. Thompson or Jack Sparrow or the Mad Hatter, etc. So for him to ostensibly play the straight man is a role (I feel) he's simply not suited for.

Have you seen him in Chocolat or The Man Who Cried? Both were 'regular' guy characters and Depp was excellent.

The Tourist didn't work because it's an all-round dud.

When Depp tries to play "normal" he looks incredibly bored. I've been noticing for yrs.

CHOCOLAT (that is not a good performance), that Polanski thing... even something like SECRET WINDOW are examples. If he uses his own accent & wears street clothes, chances are he's sleepwalking thru the performance.

I'm gonna rent THE TOURIST cuz I like Jolie & I'm studying the genre.

What did he make before Donnie Darko?

That was his debut. Southland Tales was his follow up. Are you saying Southland Tales is an even remotely watchable?

                          I'm saying Donnie Darko isn't.

yes, but in comparison to Southland Tales...
