Lazenby is difficult to assess simply because his performance varies so much within the one picture.
It's like the director (Peter Hunt?) filmed in sequence, because George is so damagingly wooden in the first third or so, then gets progressively better.
By the end, he's doing what Sean Connery could not -- convey deep anguish.
Probably should've accepted the producer's offer of another go.
