Agreed. The only reasons you might need to specify the type of gun are as a technicality to make something else in the story plausible, or to say something about the personality or mentality of the character. Otherwise there's little need to be specific beyond handgun, or you could specify revolver or semi-automatic to 'color' the scene.

For what it's worth- I would consider location. Assuming it's any US city then yeah I think a .38 but think for an exercise about where your guy got his gun. Did it come from dad's basement or did he buy it out of the back of someone's van in East Baltimore?

Good call, but — if it was stolen during, then kept after, high-end home burglaries where the burgled goods were used to pawn for cash to set up the initial drug deals — it could be almost any type of pistol. As has been stated, using “handgun” is enough unless there's a story element that requires it to be a “revolver” (the click of the hammer cocking the pistol) or a “semiautomatic” (the sound of the slide cocking the pistol).

Which are you going to use, and how, jeanpaul?

Here are the guns confiscated by Chicago PD in 2014:

Lot of .38 and 9mm. Glock is the most popular maker.

I agree with others, though. Unless it's important, you don't need to say more than "handgun."

Do that "research thing" that writers do.

I love research and applaud any effort to research but this is really a rabbit-hole question that takes you so deep that it's kind of silly. Most criminals have guns that are either stolen or given to them (if the criminal has a felony then he can't buy a gun anyway). So if someone can buy it on the consumer or blackmarket, then it's fine to use in your story.

Caliber is also kind of silly for this kind of thing. I know people say you can't kill with a .22 (not true - less powerful but a popular caliber for point-blank assassinations in the past because the slug goes in one side of the skull but not out the other) or that a .45 has the stopping power (had the body of a guy who ran three blocks with 4-5 .45's in his chest before his dropped dead in my prior profession).

Pick a gun, and go with it. More importantly, when you do pick a gun, do your research on the gun so your descriptions are correct (eg. glocks don't have a traditional safety but can't tell you how many times I've read "he flips the safety off his glock" in a script).
