Default Questions for development execs?

Hey DDP'ers,
I'm scheduled to interview a couple different production company development execs for the Scripts & Scribes podcast very soon. If any of you have questions that you think might be helpful to yourself or other writers here, please let me know.

Thanks all!

Kevin

How much do they consider budget when reading a script?

I would love to hear a development exec explain the nature of a development deal as it relates to the writer.

Hey Exponent, just want to see if I can get a better understanding of your question so I can be sure to try to get a decent answer for you.

Are you talking about the prodco itself and how their first look deal (assuming they have one) relates to hiring and working with screenwriters? Or are you talking about first look deals given to writers?

These are prodco execs and not studio execs, so their experience with first look deals might be limited, but I can always ask. Studios and bigger agencies PR departments keep a tight rein on what employees say in the media, so it's difficult to get them on the record. In any case, if you can clarify a bit more what you're looking for, I'll definitely try to get an explanation for you. Thanks!

What contractual elements constitute a mutually beneficial, for example, "$1.00 / 6-Month Option" for a development period, after which the "well-connected" producer promises to bring the project to the Studio/Financier?

Are we to expect such agreements are now more so the norm versus spec buy-outs?

Conversely, what is an example of a free/low remuneration option term agreement the writer should steer clear of?

Thanks!

Thanks Kevin for all the great interviews. I found out about your podcast recently and find them very informative!

I would like to know the best ways to approach production companies with a film project. I recently completed a script that I have developed with a director, and we already have it budgeted and created a look book for the film. We have tried many different tactics to get meetings with production companies, but we don't have managers or agents, and without a solid referral it seems incredibly hard to get their attention. I'm specifically referring to non-studio pictures under the 2 million dollar budget range.

So basically what kind of projects are they looking for, what would impress them and give them confidence (beyond a great script, of course). I know they will probably say win the Nicholl, but any practical advice beyond the obvious would be great.

Cheers,
Jezza

I'd like to know how they go about finding scripts.
Contests?
Word of mouth?
Referrals?
Blind submissions?

Yeah. "Do you actually read all the pages before you before you start throwing out these off-handed notes?"

That would be specifically for the development execs I'm working with, though.
