  • Movies you're kind of embarassed to like

We've all got 'em. We *know* that they're junk, but we can't help ourselves. When we come across them while channel-surfing we have to sit there and watch them to the finish. We might even own some of them on DVD and Blu-Ray.

And I'm not talking about "trashy" exploitation movies or those strange old Italian horror films people often described as "so bad they're good", but that are often actually just plain good. I'm talking about big-budget, mainstream turkeys that, for some reason that eludes you, can't help but make you happy when you see them.

Two that come to mind for me: RED SONJA (Brigitte Nielsen as the sword-swinging comic book heroin) and STEEL (Shaquile O'Neil as Iron Man on welfare).

    C'mon, fess up now!

    Cheers,

    B

I'm not sure this is what you're looking for, B, but I'll admit that I DID get a little sheepish when I ran into Biohazard in FB chat the night I watched and fell in love with Inception.

I think Deep Rising is the king of guilty pleasures. I mean, it's not good at all, but I think almost everyone will agree that it's absurdly fun.

But I suppose main guilty pleasure would be Emmerich's Godzilla. Gawd, that didn't turn out right. But it's sort of compelling in a comfort food way...

Except I'm not really embarrassed about them. I watched THE STUFF again a couple of nights ago - and it's still loopy weird and brilliant. A commentary on 80s consumerism disguised as a movie about an alien parasite that is sold as a frozen-yogurt-like dessert... and eats people from the inside out. How can you not love that? It's a horror movie... with parody commercials... and a serious look at how the FDA rushes products to market if there's enough $ behind them.

Larry Cohen is criminally overlooked...his films are admittedly loopy, but that's his voice. Always entertaining, and the satirical aspects are a kick.

Samuel L. Jackson having fun, running around wearing a kilt. Robert Carlyle as his straight man. Emily Mortimer in leather. (Plus, she does sell her role.) Skinheads on the floor, begging for toilet paper. One of the best climax scenes ever. (Like La Grande Bouffe on C-4.)

And then that final shot of Sam Jackson, right where he wants to be.

Yeah, but that's not what I'm talking about, Bill. THE STUFF is actually a good movie! In fact, so are most of Larry Cohen's movies, no matter how outrageous their central premises are. GOD TOLD ME TO, IT'S ALIVE!, Q and even A RETURN TO SALEM'S LOT are all pretty whacky, but I also think they're well-made films. Heck, I even like MANIAC COP II (although the first one not so much).

                            Cheers,

Like I said, a genuinely good filmmaker! I hope he's still got a few more in him somewhere down the road.
