Re: The Hobbit is getting nasty in New Zealand

I suspect that Peter Jackson will be using the strife as a lever to get a bit more funding from the government.

That's right, you heard me. I don't know why so many people are going insane over this book.movie. It's pretty much the same crap from Lord of the Rings only in ONE movie ( I guess, I can't remember a hell of a lot from the book )

More gay elves. More dirty dwarves...more sword and sorcery hoopla. YAWN.
you haven't read the book otherwise you'd know what all the hype is about

I think The Hobbit is the worst book of the set,

but whatever I'm still paying to see it when it comes out.

It's staying in NZ. Thank god for that.

Re: The Hobbit is getting nasty in New Zealand

I read that a handful of Warner execs flew down to Wellington yesterday to meet with Jackon and Walsh. Looks like everyone, including WB, are rooting for it to stay in NZ.

If they do lose the film it could have dire repercussions for their local film industry - which is, for the most part, years ahead of the Australian film industry. Doesn't surprise me that an Aussie union caused all the ruckus to begin with.

Edited: Just noticed niwa's post. Good news.

Re: The Hobbit is getting nasty in New Zealand

It's a huge relief for us - other big budget films were watching to see what happened, and if the Hobbit had folded, then they would have gone too - essentially killing a great NZ success story overnight, and putting a ton of people out of work. Which when you have a mortgage to pay, doesn't exactly put you in a good mood.

l sorry for Sir Peter J, he did a couple of interviews and you could feel how hurt and angry that the Hobbit had been held to ransom. That should never have happened, and even the Actors Equity admitted it. The heat they were taking was unreal, and in a country as small as ours where everybody knows everyone - it wasn't a pretty sight.

The good thing is it's staying. The govt had to up its tax incentive a bit - but the trade off is that they sound like they're going to do a few tourism bits and pieces with Warners to help promote the country. One of the Premieres will be held here, and it sounds like the Govt is going to work even more closely with Warners in the future, so there might be a bit of a silver lining after all.

Our PM used to work with one of the WB exec's so I guess that helped.

Just glad it's over - and everyone can get back to work.

They don't have height restrictions. They need tall people for characters that are not hobbits. Elves, humans, orcs, trees
