For us younger writers (in craft, not in life, sad face) these threads are so inspiring. Huge congrats! Good to know it happens.

It sounds like you'd gone out with another script based on comments here. Did you try and make sure you had a few good scripts before seeking out representation/producers? I kind of gleaned, based on what I've read, that new writers are smart to wait until they have 3-4 incredible scripts before putting their name out there. This way you're prepared if they ask about other projects and you're more certain about what your own version of "incredible" looks like.

Is this what you did?

Major Congratulations. Major.

Excellent game plan to have multiple scripts ready for market in different genres. It gives producers, studios a better understanding of a writer's ability.

This proves the proverbial question --- What else do you have? When a writer can deliver another script, it is so, so important.

This is what happened to me with Paramount. A request for one script, then a request for a second and then a third. This got me referrals and a whisker away from a sale on script number two. But not quite. The genres were: two comedies and one Sci-Fi Thriller.

In your case, jtwg50 - you struck gold.

Then your agent knew what to do. Good, no, great agenting.

Way to go.

Cjkahle: To answer your question, yes, I decided on a plan with my agent -- to have a "body of work" (three scripts in three completetely different genres -- R-rated comedy, crime drama and political thriller) ready to go and "in the bank" before anybody ever saw anything. I've been with her a year now and nobody had ever read my stuff except the first two folks to read the comedy last week and make offers to buy it.
The script that she's working now, with the director attached, is the political thriller, which is based on a mind-boggling and totally true story I stumbled onto by accident as a journalist when working on a story at the Library of Congress.
So yeah, since I reject the "he's a comedy guy" or "thriller guy" limitation, I decided to take the time to have the goods, so when lightning struck, if it ever did, I had more leverage and could show range.
We'll see if that works or not within the studio system, because as Craig Mazin noted in his response here, that's where the real money is.
Thanks.

Thanks, Bio -- that means a lot to me, man. I learned early on from the great Joe9Alt that we have to pay everything forward -- and I'm a big believer in karma. Keep the faith...

Whoa, I was late to this party too. Amazing news, John! Big, big congrats, buddy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: there are many talented writers hanging out in this community. I look forward to announcements from more DD'ers.

Kudos, John!
