Re: The pressure to be funny

writing an entire screenplay from concept through shooting, don't you? most assignments are rewrites and punch up, which take anywhere from one day to a few months.
Six or seven months ago you supposedly made it to the semis at Austin, then decided to blow of the contest, wrote the script of your dreams, (in the summer?), which later (how many months was this?) landed you four consecutive assignment jobs, some of which were "punch ups" (which are more often than not given to seasoned writers, btw); and within this same short time frame you were questioning the viability of working as a writer assistant at a prodoco.

On top of all of this, you go against the advice of a proven executive, in the business, who states that a 'good place to start is to write a high concept' - 'comedy' - generally speaking.

Please forgive my skepticism and play your games with someone else.

This will be my last post on the topic:

Re: The pressure to be funny

i started out writing marketable, high concept comedies that got no interest at all, and it was my dark, personal, ****ed up screenplay that finally got me work. you know what i heard at every single meeting? "we could never, ever make this movie, but we LOVE it, and we have this idea we want to hire you to write with that same style."
Just a guess but I bet your "dark, personal, ****ed up" script was just much better than your "marketable, high-concept" comedies. I agree that you might have been writing the wrong things when you started out. But maybe it was "wrong" for you and not for everyone else.

Because a marketable, high concept comedy is rare and worth a fortune. A poorly executed version of the same comedy script is common and worthless.

                    That's a 'whore-ible' combo.

And the bartender says "I'm a screenwriter and I wrote a period piece that centers on one week when my girlfriend was totally on the rag."

I'm planning on a franchise about a nymphomaniac serial killer. I'll single-handedly creater the whorer genre.
