Default Option before rewrite?

A wealthy producer with legit creds has asked me to do a re-write changing one aspect of the screenplay - before optioning the work? Is that unusual?

If this wealthy producer has legit creds - it seems worth doing. Get it in the bag. Take the money.

I did rewrites for free for a producer and now the script's out to actors.

If it's not too much work and you think it helps the script anyway, then do it.

Without addressing the ethical aspect, it is certainly not at all unusual.

If it doesn't improve the script you prob don't want to waste your time. If it does improve the script, doing it for free is probably in your interest. Consider the alternatives:

A free rewrite when the script is under option: the least desirable situation of all. Producer effectively has exclusivity on your free work for the duration of the option.

Paid rewrite under option: Producer owns rewrite even after the option expires. Great if he pays you worthwhile money, and you get a reversion clause (perfectly standard). But you will always have to repay the rewrite fees at some point if you want to use the rewrite.
