  • "...every piece of media with a moving image on the screen or a recorded human voice"

...At Wednesday's rally, WGA West President Patric Verrone declared: "I announce today the WGA doctrine for the 21st century -- that every piece of media with a moving image on the screen or a recorded human voice must have a writer. And every writer must have a WGA contract. For our friends in the press, that was the sound bite."

    From IMDB.com.

    Is this fair?

Should a writer be credited for every piece of media, whether they have contributed words or not?

Contributed words? Isn't 95% of screenwriting the structure, setting, characterization, action -- what happens? Someone writes that stuff.

If producers of a reality show conceptualize situations for the participants (create the setting and the action) and then editors put the show together (structure), should they be considered writers?

That's the question. Calling a writer a producer doesn't make her any less of a writer, though.

That would also cover video games, yes?

Wasn't it a few months ago that there was someone posting here about one of the reality shows where the writers were getting short shrift because of some loophole or other where they weren't actually considered writers? (Or am I confusing that with something else, which is entirely possible.)

That's been an ongoing issue. The writers of reality shows don't currently have WGA protection, so they get screwed. Not only do the producers of these reality shows want to keep screwing the writers, they also don't want to admit publicly their shows are not really unscripted -- so they're resisting the move to bring reality programming under the WGA umbrella.
