  • Theory About Transitions

I was just reading Michael Ray Brown's (Story Sense) formatting guide and he writes:

The use of "FADE OUT.- in conjunction with "FADE IN:- can be combined as "FADE TO:-, a single instruction that takes up less space.
How does that look like in practice?

    Then I check this out

    http://www.screenwriting.info/10.php

    and it states:

FADE OUT (never at the end of the script)
Why would someone write that? What is the reasoning?

They're saying that if you're fading out of one scene, and fading into the next, you can just put "FADE TO." They're not talking about using it at the beginning/end of a script.

    Code:
    INT. LOCATION - DAY

    Character does something.

                                        FADE TO:

    INT. DIFFERENT LOCATION - NIGHT

    Different character does something else.
    I don't think it's used much.

As to the second question, about never using FADE OUT at the end... someone would say that because they're stupid.

Not that he needs my support, but I am going to say ditto to what Jeff said.

I checked out the link, because I thought that maybe the statement about not using FADE OUT at the end of a script was just ambiguous. But such was not the case. It was stupid.
