TeresaMLA (and any other Hilton Garden Inn folks)

I know. I ended up walking a few women back to the HGI (where I stayed). Only once did I feel like even my Philly street smarts wouldn't work. That was when at 3-4 AM, a group of drunk frat boys started yelling at another guy's girlfriend and he said "I'm going to my truck, to get my gunS. GUNS."

        Ah, Texas.

There was a harmless street artist who followed me one night. Ended up doing a really nice sketch of me. Otherwise, that last stretch IS very dark and quiet in a seedy, lurking kinda way. So def take pedicab and/or walk in a group.

Otherwise, the Hilton Garden Inn was fine. Not great, not bad. Worth the money and only 6 blocks away from conference. The morning sun can be really hot though (no shade) on the walk there.

As a treat to myself and to maximize scheduling, I'm staying in the heart of the conference action this year.

It's incredibly amusing to me. RichMike is part of my longer name. Never meant for it to be "I'm Mike, and I'm rich."

LOL!!! Cracks me up every time; as many people have commented.

But, even with a taste for finer things, a $240-280 hotel room is an investment!

I just made the decision that intense focus, tons of knowledge, lack of sleep and the potential for lots'o'booze call for the Driskoll or SFA.

If anyone needs a roommate to split expenses, let me know. I don't snore.

I've found two past roommates on DD, you guys are great.

How about Friday evening for the DD happy hour? 8pm, someone pick the place / or meet at the Driskill bar?

On another note, is it worth paying an extra two hundred dollars to be able to get the Producers badge and attend the following events? My initial thought is, if they were here (in SF) and I had to pay $200 to attend, I would probably do it... ?

Friday - 445pm Film Texas BBQ Supper
Friday - 11pm Filmmakers Happy Hour
Sunday - 10 am Hair of the Dog Brunch

I talked myself into it, how can I pass up Austin BBQ?!

But I'd still be interested to hear what you thought of these events last year.

Re: Austin - attending the conference

I've attended AFF as a conference badge holder and a producer badge holder. When I had the conference badge I always met lots of people with producer badges and then it was really awkward when they were going to the party and I couldn't get in. Also: the BBQ is a really good way to meet people (not just schmooze with the honorees and panelists, though they're there) but regular people that you'll now have as part of your network and you'll all help each other up the ladder. Or at the very least chit-chat over BBQ.

The Hair of the Dog Brunch is *wonderful* food that Ranch 616 doesn't serve any other time of the year--they don't normally serve brunch. They have amazing biscuits, free mimosas, Topo Chico (really good sparkling water from Mexico...yes, you heard that right!) eggs, crisp bacon, etc. I've always met really great people at both. And I'm a quiet person who has a hard time meeting people. So I really recommend it.

That sounds amazing - thank you for making me feel justified!

Please look for me, I'll be the one eating everything you just said with a mimosa in my hand.

One of my two semifinalist scripts made it through! Unfortunately I won't be able to make the trip to Austin, but my writing partner will be there. Feel free to say hi!

I currently have a reservation for a suite at Orangewood (http://orangewoodsuites-px.rtrk.com/) for the 18th, 19th and 20th. It's a two bedroom, two bath, loft type arrangement w/kitchenette. Room rate is $105 per night plus tax. It's about 5 miles from the Driskill.

If anyone would like to split the cost with me, please let me know ASAP. If not, I'll be canceling the reservation on Friday and finding a single room.
