Depending on the kind of past, what kind of research, and how long ago:
Librarian, geologist, auctioneer, religious scholar, vulcanologist, astronomer, psychologist, investor, ancestry researcher, anthropologist, criminologist, writer, the folks who fact-check for films (can't remember their titles at the moment), lawyer, judge, museum staff, authentication expert, war-crime hunters, and sociologist.
