  • What are some great Westerns?

I'm feeling nostalgic for DeadWood and want to watch some great Westerns, something with a broad story I hope. What are some of your favorites?

Re: What are some great Westerns?

Once Upon a Time in the West
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (pretty much most of the ones with Clint Eastwood)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
      Young Guns
I also enjoyed the True Grit remake.

      With a more comedic bent:
      Blazing Saddles
      Little Big Man

The above lists are great, but I would have to add High Noon, one of the true classics. Of the more recent films, I would say Open Range is a must watch.

Another shout for Once Upon a Time in the West, for me the best Western ever made and my all time favourite film.

Fantastic direction and performances coupled with a superb Morricone soundtrack; find the biggest TV you can and enjoy!

Open Range was very good. Anyone seen Haven's Gate?

Duck you sucker was a good one, but I'll wait to see it on Bluray for next time. Kind of the forgotten Sergio Leone pic.

Anyone got any good resources of information for approaching the writing of a western?

I haven't seen the original True Grit yet actually.

Can't believe Wild Bill didn't mention Tombstone.

Do you guys (and gals) think there are many parallels between westerns and crime sagas? They feels similar to me in many ways, but I can't think why.

am I off the mark with this?

You're not. When I first watched "American Gangster", it was like Sam Peckinpah was directing a blaxploitation film with Western sensibilities. Frank was like a Mexican general whose activities was reaching over the boarder into Richie's area.

                          My list:
                          The Wild Bunch
                          Stagecoach (1939)
                          The Searchers
                          The Professionals
                          Navajo Joe
                          Ride The High Country
                          The Tall T
Rawhide (not the TV show, but the film starring Tyrone Power and Susan Hayward, and it was written by Stagecoach's own Dudley Nichols!)
                          Ballad of Cable Hogue
                          3:10 to Yuma (both versions)
                          Silverado
                          High Noon

I hated Silverado, everything was so clean looking, it was like watching a feature length Persil commercial. Assuming this is the Kasdan film I'm thinking of.
