  • Format for dialogue on a TV in the background

At the start of the scene I am writing, I want to have a TV going in the background as a way to impart some information without having a main character speak the lines, which would be totally unrealistic.

What's the best way to accomplish this?

The images on the TV aren't as important as what the newscaster says, which will be just line or two at the most. Should that be formatted as dialogue or is it okay to include the words in the scene description?

You would say something like "A TV plays in the background."

Then in the character line you call the character something like NEWS ANNOUNCER and use the parenthetical (V.O.) which means voice-over.

Then have the characters pull up chairs in front of the TV to watch how the movie ends.
