  • That's a BFD.

Do you hear people say "That's a B-F-D"?

I don't mean the words they stand for, but those 3 initials in that expression.

(For current purposes, I'm distinguishing this from "What's the B-F-D?")

I work in a small, informal office (where people just say those words, as needed). I'm writing a scene that takes place in a large organization/office and wonder if people use the initials there, or anywhere. Thanks.

BFD is fairly common, but by no means will everyone understand it.

        That is a BFD, BDZ.

BDZ, it was just there. I couldn't help myself.

BTW, I think BFD is dated.

FWIW: I use BFD a lot. I think most people will get it. No one's ever had to ask me for an explanation.

So does V.P. Joe Biden, and when he said it on TV, it was a BFD.

To be clear, the Vice President said THE ACTUAL WORDS, not the acronym.

Hey, there's an idea for a comedy spec: "When a new administration enters the White House, the staff becomes frustrated when the President is a bit too loose with his choice of words- which cause a series of crisis'."

I actually thought it meant Big Fucking Dick. And I'd reply, "Why thank you."

                  But seriously, what's the BFD?

Never heard this - I'm from the UK but have lived and worked in New York for 5 years and never once came across this acronym in or out of work.

Pretty sure "THE BFD" is a kid's book by Roald Dahl.

Ha! I thought this at first too, then remembered that he was a Giant.

Why anyone would want to write something like this in an action line is beyond me. And even as dialogue, if people in the region actually use this, I'd still advise against it.

By the way, an acronym is a word made up out of the initials for something else, not the letters said separately.
                              (Navy) SEAL = acronym
                              B.F.D. is not.
