Obviously, don't offer up a sob story in an effort to win sympathy. That goes without saying. But if he shows interest in you and your life? Sure, don't hide it. There's something to be said for overcoming adversity.

Actually, she's originally from Chicago. Even so...Yeah. It's been two weeks, and I'm still utterly shell-shocked. We're at least on speaking terms now, but it's like she's joined a cult. Brainwashed. Different person. She's open to negotiating legal crap (finances, divorce paperwork, etc.), but absolutely refuses to talk about anything else. Including the fact that her boyfriend is a bipolar, abusive misanthrope. My beautiful, vivacious wife...The love of my life...And he hits her. I don't have the words.

In any case, the meeting is set up for July 2nd....And they've asked for writing samples. I'm hoping someone can tell me what they mean by that. I mean, obviously we're talking script excerpts...But what's a good length? Would treatments be acceptable?

God, I feel so green. But I really don't want to drop this ball.

A writing sample is your best full-length feature script. That's your currency.

So, by a "sample," they mean the entire spec?

Yes, your best script.

Got it. They asked for two, so it looks like the weekend is buff and polish time.

Thanks for the data.

I can definitely relate. My rival is an abusive, alcoholic, underemployed, chain-smoking psycho. And she refuses to get rid of him.

Save your words henceforth for your career.

"There are many fish in the sea." -- A wise man

The waters of the Great Lakes are cold, and so are the fish. The waters of Southern California are warm, and so are the fish, and owing to the warmth, there are fish aplenty.

However, do not reel in for yourself the first catch of the day. Your are urged and encouraged to employ a 'catch and release' policy until your shark bite has healed completely.

In your 'catch and release' sampling of said fish from the warm waters of Southern California, you are also urged and encouraged to import and employ for yourself the Scandinavian dining tradition of a Smörgåsbord, as any fisherman healing from a shark bite is apt to need variety in his sustenance for a healthy recovery.

Eat hearty. Eat well. Live long, and prosper. Go forth and multiply, as a writer, yet beware the adders of L.A. (cut 'em up and use 'em for bait).

The past, even just yesterday, is a memory. Only the malleable future can be forged.

Fare thee well.
