  • Sleepwalk With Me (Upsets Joss Whedon)

Has anyone seen this yet? I haven't due to it's limited release, yet it looks fantastic for a small indie film -

and anything that incurs the ire of Joss Whedon has to be worth watching right?

Here is Mike Birbiglia and Ira's Glass' response to Joss Whedon's call for everyone to boycott their movie.

Has the world gone mad? Can no-one detect publicity stunt and satire anymore?

I'm not directing this at OP (since I assume they 'got it'), but all the MORONS who have jumped on this like Whedon is ACTUALLY serious about the boycott (don't believe me? Check You Tube/blog comments).

Honestly, if you can't detect the satirical undertone in this-

Then give up screenwriting. NEVER, EVER open Final Draft again. You'll never understand SUBTEXT.

EDIT: Also should say, it was a brilliantly pitched bit of satire by both parties involved. And a VERY CLEVER publicity stunt. People are already saying how they intend to boycott the movie when it's released. In fact, they intend to boycott it.... twice.

I like him in a purely platonic, awkward man-hug kind of way.

I like the part where Whedon tells people to call the local arthouse theater to book the film so they can boycott it.

I LOVE him in a purely platonic, awkward "will you chat with me over a beer" kind of way. Like how I love my dog. But without the chat. And the beer.

"...we have to support corporate entertainment, like good Americans."

                  Great.

Hate to correct you, Doc, but this is my favorite part. It's-

                    "Nurturing Corporate Spectacle"

As screenwriters, we all understand the power of word choice. Joss is not even saying tentpole blockbusters are 'Entertainment'. He's saying they're 'Spectacle'.

A man drops his undercrackers and takes a dump in the street is a spectacle. Especially if you put it on enough TVs.

I love his choice of word.

                      I stand corrected, then.

More than "spectacle", though, the word that I find interesting is "nurturing", not because of any subtletly in meaning but because of the tone.

I met him a couple of times during the strike in 2007. Not claiming we're best buddies now, but he really seems like a cool guy and a great writer. So happy he hit it out of the park with The Avengers.

Saw this tonight along with a Q & A with Ira Glass. Very generous guy, that Ira. He spoke about how he'd seen a lot of movies, but never wrote a movie so he was going on and on about the inciting incident, act structures, low point of act two, etc. It was a hoot! The film was good, Mike is great; I would have preferred more of a focus on Mike's unique disorder, but that's cuz' I'm a bit of a brain disorder geek. Support the film if it comes to your town!
