Re: Good Advice From Writers
This is a positive thread , but just to point out how people are different I have no idea why everyone loves Michael Clayton so much. I watched it last year after Brian keep mentioning it and I felt nothing. Got nothing from it.
When I see 100% positive talk about the biggest movies on twitter -- I just laugh because that's impossible unless it's like Toy Story 4.
So my piece of advice would be "It's okay not to like a movie every other writer claims to love. Someone is probably lying. Don't pretend to be someone else."
In film school we had a class and the teacher ask our favorite films. And I had many answers in my head. But this is 1997, so these kids are all from the 80s and this wasn't a time where it was easy to see art house films -- but at least 10 kids said Brazil and other what I consider pretentious choices (maybe 1 kid actually loved that movie) -- and I"m like motherfucckerss we are all here because we watched Star Wars and Indiana Jones and The Goonies growing up -- but they wanted to seem cool in the group.
That day I choose HOWARD THE DUCK as one of my favorite movies. I was not lying. I even used that in my cover letter for 10 years. Quack Quack.
